'■ • GENERAL NEWS. Two "primary schools' representative teams —basket-ball and football from Ashburton left for Timaru yesterday to contest matches agjiinst South Canterbury representative teams. The senior football, team, under the management of Mr H. J. Chapman, consists of boys under 7st 71b, while the juniors, under Mr L. Grieve, consist of boys under sst 71b. The girls' basketball teams are under Misses Cowen and Gray. - At the monthly meeting of the Longbeach Road Board held on . Tuesday afternoon, there were present Messrs J. P. McQuilkin (chairman), A. Moore, E. Watts, and W. Anderson. The Department of Internal Affairs forwarded a copy of the proposed Motor Vehicle Bill, which was received. In reply to the County Council's letter regarding road maintenance, it was decided to ask the Council for a more definite proposal, and also for a revised list of the county roads in the Board's district. The chairman was appointed the Board's representative on the Chamber of Commerce.- It was decided to vote £5 5s to the Plunket Society.
"One of the most successful Inglesides of the season was held under the. auspices of the Ashburton Scottish Society on Tuesday night in the Orange Hall. Then 1 was a large attendance, and a good programme - was submitted by Christchurcli and local talent. After supper the -hall was cleared, and a dance followed.. • .
Bo'ro.ugh School Committee". At the monthly meeting, of the Borough School Committee, Mr J. Watson presided. The Education Board wrote stating that in consequence of the re•duced average attendance of the school, the committee' was not now entitled to its'present staff, and that one of the temporary teachers had been asked to transfer to another position. The Borougli Council wrote directing the committee's attention to the necessity of installing the sewerage system. It was decided to forward a copy of the letter to the Education Board. The inspectors' report was satisfactory, and the committee complimented the staff upon the: success attained during the last . term, '. : The., headmaster's, report stated that the present roll number was "4iu and the-average attendance 423. _ A -deputation from-, the Ashburton- Swimming Club u waited upon the committee and- asked permission to erect seating acommodation at the swimming baths to' seat 700 people. The request was granted, and t in view oi the fact that the club was erecting the seating accommodation, it was resolved that it be granted the use of the school baths; free of charge. It was decided to recommend the Education Board to appoint Mr E. Coker-to the committee in place of Mr- F. H, Linijop.
