COUNTY COUNCILS.
GREYMOUTH, GEETM'O.mH, August 20. The., monthly meeting 'of the Grey. County Council was held to-day. Present: Crs. P. Donnellan (chairman), A. Blair,. A, Eobiueos, D. Baybutt, J. Eyail, J. Grean-', J. W. .Hannan, J. 'lrvine, and H. G.. Carter. A letter was received from the. Minister of Public- Works stating that he could not seo his way to make a grant for, the. metalling of the Xoiuku-Bell Hill road-. A further letter' advised that the Minister could not reconsider his decision, refusing a £ for £ subsidy ior protective works at Totara- Flat.
The chairman reported that an application for assistance had been made- to tha Lands Department, and furth.-r action was deierred pending the receipt of a reply •to this, communication.
The Under-Secretary of the Mines Department advised that the Public .Works Department had issued authority for the &q?enditure of £4OO on the Roa-Brahon track, the work to be carried out. under the supervision of the Public Works Department. .
A litter was received from the Westland County Council with reference to the report of the Timber .Royalty Commission, and a.n active campaign to induce the Government to alter its decision was urged. It was re-solved-to . extend support to the representations and to supply members and the. Press with a report of the deputation to tiio Prime Minister.
An application by the Omoto .Sawmill Syndicate..to cross the Main. South' road at Ivaiata' with a tramway wag.. referred to engineer.
A letter •• was • received f rom the Assistant Under-Secretary, Public Worts Department forwarding the report of tli6 Cobden Bridge Commission. 'The effect of its d xision was ths-t from July 31st, 1924, the cost of maintaining, repairing and improving the bridge will be'borne in the following proportions.: Greymouth Borough Council CO per cent., Cobden Town Board 40 per cent., firey County Council 5 per cent.," Bunanga. Borough Council 5 per cent. A letter from the Reefton School of !Mines asking for a donation was received, the limi' of unauthorised 'expenditure having, been reached. A petition was received from 140 residents of the Lake Brurmer dis'rict asiing for the comp'etion of the Buru-i£oana road. It wes' decided to ash the Minister of Public Works to put the wo:k ir. hand, and' to r6aue'st Mr J. O'Brien, ALP., to make" representations on the subject. Cr. Hannan suggested that the Council should Siva a lead to county residents in a scin-me to rais6 voluntary contributions for the hospital. The Hayor of (Jreymouth had" consented to call a public matins in ihe direction indicated, ?nd it was suggested that the country districts should cooperate by forming hospital committees. 'it was decided to taks steps to collect the dog ta;;. A vote of thanks to the Harbour Board for' the use of Us ofiices for meeting purposes was earned., A motion of sympathy with Cr. A. Blair in his' recent bereavement was carried in silence. Crs. Eannan, Irvine, and Greaney, ana the' county engineer and solicitor were appointed to frame suggested amendments to fhe Councils heaw traffic by-laws and the Slotor Vehides Bill.
