ASHBURTON CHAMBER OF COMMERCE.
MEETING OF COUNCIL,
A meeting of the council of iho Ashburton Chamber of Ooicmeroo was hold last night. Present—Messrs 2?. "\Y. Seldon (chairman), G-. "W. Leadley, F. W. "Watts, A. Lano, J. W. Bowdcn, J. i\ L-aing-, T. M. Clark, W. J. Moore, A. P. Raven, J. E. Christian, A. A. Mao Donald, and V/. Page. The following were appointed representatives of various bodio3 on tlio council: Messrs A. F Raven (A.A.A.), G. V. Jb-eadley (Mid-Canterbury Farmers' Union), Bailey Wit hell (R-angitata, Koad Board), B. Bull (Anamu. Boad Board), "W. G. Gallagher (County Council), "W. G. Ilillier (Borough Council), E. F. Niooll Board), A. V. Bnmett (Mayneld A. and P. Association). The association of the Now Zealand Chamber of Commerce wroic suggesting "that tha Ashburton Council alfiliate with that body, and enclosed a. copy of rules, and also stated that it had been suggested that a conference of South Island Chambers Ee convened to discuss the coastal and overseas and South Island shipping and transport generally. It was euggested that the conference bo held in Dunedin about the end of this month.' It was decided to refer iho _ matter of affiliation to the Finance Committee for ii report. The appointment of sectional committees was made as follows: Exporters and .Manufacturers—Jleesr3 A. Italic /chairman), li. Buchanan, E.' F. Nice 13, and H. A. Lloyd. Produoe—Messrs G. W. lieadley (chairman), H. F. Scldon, Brown, and A. A. McDonald. Retailers— A. P. Raven (chairman*, W. J. Moore, T. M. Clark, W. Page, 12". H. Orr. Finance —Messrs J. "W. Bowdor. (chairman), J. B. Christian, J. S. Lain?. V>. T . H. "Woods. The South Canterbury Chamber's resolution with reference to stabilisation of tha wheat-growing industry ivaa referred to the Produce Committer for a report It was decided to approach the dairy factories v,-it'll a view to representation on tha Council. The matter of publication? was left in the hands of the Finance Committee, with power to act. Ths chairman reported that a com-rtiue-' had met officials- from the Railway Department in connexion with the proposed increase of ref.ta's of the railway siding at 'Ashburton. T'ho Department had given them no definite understanding in the matter at the time, but ho hoped to have a Tcply in the course cf a few days. A resolution was passed requesting tne member for the district to co-operate with Mr G. "Witty, M.P., in asking for better facilities for checking lugscage between North and South Island stations ■ The secretary was instructed to wrUo to the Post and Telegraph Department vita a viW to having a late fee box erected on the station and a parcel box erected at tha ■oost office, in which to. post parcels after the <ifi.ee had closed. Mr Page's resolution, seconded by Mr T. M. Cl&rS, "That this meeting o£ tho Ashburton Chamber of Commerce, having considered the question cf a Eubbidiar? source oi power for the district, assures the Aehbnrton Power Board of its unanimous support of the 3?orth Branch scheme, and t-ho member for the district to givo his practical aas smncc to the project," was carried unanimously.
