* the REV. T. X. GRIFFIN. The Her. Thomas IS". Griffin, who died at his residence, St. Jame3 Avenue. Papanui, yesterday morning, was wellknown in different parts of New Zealand, whore ho was a minister of tho Methodist Church for more than forty j ears. " was at Coromandel that he met his tuture wife, iliss de Carteret, whose came Zealand from tne Channel Islands. In later years .ic was minister of churches in important provincial centres, as well as suburban stations, such as Addington and Papanui. In addition to the work that falls to the lot of all Ministers, he did a. great deal of secretarial work. For thirteen years he was secretary of tho District Synod, and for several years he was the secretary of the' Canterbury Methodist Sunday ydiool Lnion. I n 1918 failing health compelled him to retire from the full responsibilities of the ministry, and since that date he had been a supernumerary res-ding at Papanui. On several occasions he did good service by doing "supply" work for invalided ministers. For several years lie had been the chaplain for hospitals in Chri3tchurch, and in this capacity he did very valuable work, which was greatly appreciated by patients. His work as secretary of the Papanui Burgesses' Association ia well known, and it was largely through his efforts that the purchase of St. James Park was made possible. Mrs Griffin predeceased her husband early in 1923. Mr. Griffin is survived by four daughter.-! —Mrs Schneider (Macmillan avenue, Cashmere Hiils), Misses Maude and Adelaide Griffin ■ (Papanui), and Mrs Hayman (Fairlie).

ME THOMAS DAWSON. One of Canterbury's early pioneers, Mr Thomas Dawson, pasesd away ait his residence, 609 Main South road, Hornby, on Sunday, at the age of 90 years. His funeral took place on Tuesday, and the large number of old colonists and residents of the Yald- ( hurst-Hornby-Riccarton districts who | followed the cortege, was evidence of ' the esteem in which he was held. Mr Dawson was born at Macklcfield, England, in 1834. Till 1857 he worked as a labourer, and ho then decided to emigrate to New Zealand. _He sailed from England in the ship Glentanner, i in tlio early months of that year. In ' -the same ship his late wife, Miss H. • Holmes, was a passenger with her parents. The Glentanner dropped anchor in Lyttelton harbour, and Mr Dawson went to Riecarton to work for 1 Mr Thomas Ita-wley. Later ho bought a small farm in Hanson's road, and then bought the old Cabbage Tree Farm at Hornby, which he worked till ten years ago. Hie farm, which was of 5G acres, is at present being worked . by one of his grandchildren, Mr T. H. Dawson. When Mr Dawson bought the farm, nearly sixty years ago, an old mud house was the homestead, but he built a little wooden lean-to, which he added to as the years went on. \bout thirty years ago the doublestorey section was finished, and it stands to the present day. In Mr Dawsoirs early days only three houses comprised the village of Hornby, and Ills nearest neighbour "was Mr John Overton, whoso homestead was about a mile across the fields to the soiithwest. where a patch of bluegums is a prominent landmark to this' day. At the Riecarton Church Mr Dawson was married to Miss Holmes by Archdeacon Matthias. Always a keen churchman, Mr Dawson was a prominent member of the Templeton Anglican Ohurch, and a founder of St. Columba's Anglican Church at Hornby. In 1906 he gave a section of land, and St. Columba's now stands on the site given by him. The font in the church was given by Mr Dawson in memory of his wife. For twelve years Mr Dawson was a member of the Yald'hurst Road Board, and was a member of the Templeton School Committee, and also of the old Plumpton Trottinsr Club, when race meetings were held at Templeton. Mr Dawson was the second 1 man to buy shares in the New Zealand Farmers' Co-operative Association of Canterbury. Up to his death he talked of the early days of Canterbury, and was proud of being a member of the Canterbury Pilgrims' Association. In 1902, Mrs Dawson died, and was buried at Riecarton Churchyard. .Mr-and Mrs Dawson had c family of four sons and three daughters. All the children, with the exception orf one daughter, survive him. He is also survived by twelve grandchildren and seventeen great-grandchildren. The Rev. H. T. York officiated at the burial service. Tlio four sons were "•« nail-bearers. Rev. Father Dominic M«ngra, wellknown throughout- Now Zealand as a member cf the Redemptioiiist Order, suocumbed to air attack or c«uicgi on Sundav last. Deceased, who was born in 1857, was known as nu eloquent preacher, and spent 39 years of his life as a priest on missionary work and re-* treats in tho Heme Countries, Australia. and New Zealand. For six years prior to November, IS2I, he was in this countrv, and was transferred* to Ballarat, where his death occurred.

The death occurred at Auckland on Monday of Mr Herbert Logic, ths sixth son of "the late Mr Charles H. G. Logie, first Collector of Customs at Dunedin. The late Mr H. Logie was chief postmaster at Thames, from which position he -etired on superannuation. He entered the Post and Telegraph service as . a cadet at Dunedin, He was one of the first 10 boys enrolled at the Otago Boys' High School.
