Mrs "Westall has returned to Christchurch from a visit to the North Island. Dr. and Mrs Fenwick, who have been in Christchurch for the races, return to Wellington to-night. Mrs Keith Ollivier (Waimate) leaves for her home this morning.

Miss Thelma Thompson has returned from a short visit to Dunedin. Mrs J. A. Prinsep left last evening for Wellington to bid good-bye to her sister, Miss A. D. Eennie, who will leave on the Tahiti on Tuesday for an extended visit to Canada, America, and Englav.d. Mr and Mrs Robert Hartley (Okain "s Bay) are staying with Mr and Mrs Anson, of Christchurch. Miss E. Bacon (Gore) is in Christchurch for the races. The appointment of Miss Ethel M. Burns as supervisor of needlework instruction for the schools in the Christchurch area has been confirmed. Mr and Mrs W. McGrucr (St. Albans) and Miss Rita McGruer are at present on a holiday trip to Auckland and Eotorua. The engagement is announced of Kathleen, eldest daughter of Mrs H. A'Court and the late Henry A Court, of Christchurch, to Rex, son of Rev. C. and the late Mrs Abernethy, also of Christchurch. The final of the monthly dances of the "West Christchurch District High School Past Students' Association will be held in the Ridgely Hall on Thursday evening:. Tickets for the annual bail, to be held in the Winter Garden on Thursdav, September 4th, may now be obtained from the committee or at the Bristol.

Special dances will be held to-night and on Monday night at the St. Asaph street Hali "t>v the Ghristchurch Plain Dance Assembly. The assembly will hold its Queen of Carnival Fancy Dress Ball on Saturday next at the Caledonian Hall. Jackson's full orchestra will supply the music. One of the most interesting meetings of the year was held by the Woolst«n Girls' Friendly Society last Tuesday. The fact that every woman Joves a hat was clearly shown by the attention paid to Miss Nancy Wass during h°-v practical demonstration on millinery, vote of thanks to the demonstrator and trimmed it in several styles. A hearty vote of thanks to the deitvonvtraix"* and the serving of cupper brought an interesting evening to a close. The Wembley Club are holding a grand carnival dance at St. .Mary's Memorial Hull on Monday night. Amongst '-tho many attractions will be an exhibition of ballroom dancing, given by Mr Fred Reade Wauchop and Miss Tlielma Thompson. On Thursday the club' are holding a monster children's plain and fancy dress carnival, at which every dance will be a novelty. The dance will be from 7.30 till 10.30 p.m.

The members of the Canterbury University College Women's Club has issued invitations for their annual ball, to be held in the College Hall on Thursday, August 21st. Mesdames J. Shelley, j C. Foweraker, C. Weatherburn, Misses '•Herriott and\ Tosswill will act as chaperons, and the members of the ball committee are Misses M. Kennedy, G. Burns, M. Seymour, N. Pattrick, P. Montgomery, and M. Walker, and Messrs Dunlop, Edmundson, and F. G. Morrison.

'•Every Woman Her Own Dressmaker" "was the subject demonstrated at the Hfrme Economics Association last evening in the Y.M.C.A. rooms. The good attendance showed the interest attached to such work and much appreciation was shown to Mrs Goldsmith for the interesting, and lucid explanation of the McCall pattern. A simple draped evening gown was cut, tucked and placed on the figure. Certainly if women could make their garments as surely and quickly as did Mrs Goldsmith, money, time and temper would lie saved. A large gathering of members and friends is expected in the .Tellicoe Hall on Friday evening,' August 29th.

The dreary weather yesterday morning did not militate against the attendance at the Metropolitan Trotting Club's Meeting at Addington, but it had a very marked effect on the dressing of the women, who could not. foretell that, before noon, the sun would be shining brilliantly, so much SO that in the front seats of the members' stand it was in the afternoon almost uncomfortably warm. A most enjoyable evening was spent on Thursday at the residence of Mr and Mrs W. O. Sail, Oust, where a "kitchen evening" was given for Miss Emilv Rowe, whose marriage to Mr Ruttierford Good takes place shortly. The hostess wore black silk trimmed with white and black lace, and the guest of honour wore Clack crcpc de chine with touches of salmon pink. Th> night was beautifully mild and gamf» were played on the lawn urti] a late hour. The guests then adjourned to the house where indoor games, music, and competitions occupied the rest of the evening. Musical items were given by Misses Jean Barrie, Joyce and Pat Smith (vocal), Messrs W. Sail. Whit'v house and C. Johnson (vocal), and Mr W. O.Sail (violin). The accompaniments were played by Miss Lewis, Messrs H. Sail and Whitehonsf\ and a recitation was given ! by Mr Whitehouse. The competitions "were won by Miss Eva Rowe and Mr V. Frizzell. Great in terest was shown in the opening of tb» parcels, which revealed an assortment of varied and useful articles. Mr A. Rowe responded on behalf of his sister, and Mr C. Johnson on behalf of Mr Ood. who was unable to be present. The guests all joined heartily in singing "For They are Jolly Good Fellows." Amongst those present were Mr and Mrs W. O.
