WINNER OF WEIGHT GUESSING. 11,000 ENTRIES IN DIXON BROS.' FREE COMPETITION. Cash'el street was subject' to much excitement at 0.30 yesterday morning, the occasion being the official weighing of the prize bullock purchased at the "National" market by Dixon Bros., and for which a free weiglitguessing competition has been in progress for some days. A big crowd, rolled up to hear the correct weight, and Dixon Bros.' shop and environs were so crammed that business' was suspended for the time being. His Worship the Mayor (Mr J. A. Plesher) ; and the Town Clerk (Mr J. S. Neville) were in attendance to supervise the weighing, and when the scales were nicely balanced, the Mayor announced the weight as being 182751b. Some comparison can be made of the size of this beast when it is explained that the average, bullock weighs round about 8001b. In addition to its huge weight, the condition of the meat of the bullock was excellent, and competent judges declare that it was one of the finest big beasts ever slaughtered. -,. The. Town..Clerk very kindly provided facilities .'for .quickly ~ finding but! the winning ticket out of the 11,000 sent in, and within two hours his staff of seven had been through the tickets and located the one lucky guess which carries off the £lO cash prize. Accompanying the winning ticket, the Town Clerk sent the following interesting .letter: — "Dear Sirs,—l have to inform you that all the papers in connexion with the weight-guessing competition have been examined, and there is only one giving the correct : weight (182751b), viz., that of ' Mrs T. J. Thompson, Woodend.

"I may state that there were ten papers giving the weight at 18271b, and five giving it at 18281b. The. lowest weight recorded was 21b, and the highest 10,001,7001b." At the conclusion of the weighing ceremony yesterday morning, Mr Welsford, on behalf of Dixon Bros., expressed appreciation of the aetion of the Mayor and Town Clerk in coining forward and supervising the weighing of the beast. He also desired to thank the Town Clerk and staff for the valuable assistance they had rendered in scrutinising the guesses.

Dixon Bros, also take this opportu* nity to .thank Mr W. Milner and staff, of the :City .Abattoirs," the veffy able manner in which they' decorated the prize carcases which constituted the magnificent display in Dixon Bros.' during this week. ( 0
