NEW BRIGHTON NOTES.
«—- Tides. It will be high tide on the beach today at 10.24 a.m., and in the river at 11.54 a.m.; and to-morrow at 11.20 a.m. and 12.50 (noon) respectively. School Committee. The School Committee met on Wednesday, Mr F. Ward presiding. The inspectors report on the Main and South Brighton Schools was received, and considered highly satisfactory. It was decided to increase the caretaker's wages by 5s per week. The headmaster's report showed the roll number to be: Main School 657, South Brighton School CO. It was decided to place a "tablet" in the Infants' School in memory of the late Miss D. B. Ormandy. Presbyterian Church. A successful social was held on Wednesday. During the evening the Rev. W. Gray Dixon, M.A., gave an interesting address on the influence of the church in the making of character. A substantial offering was made towards current and general expenses. A fine programme of musical and elocutionary items, with supper, occupied the evening. South Brighton Progress League. There was a very satisfactory attendance at the monthly meeting of the South Brighton Progress League. Mr Adams gave a very interesting address on transport, dealing in detail with the financial side regarding initiative outlay, cost of purchase of plant, running and overhead expenses. On Wednesday an enjoyable dance and euchre tourney was held by members of the League. The prize-winners were: Ladies, Mrs Rogers 1, Mrs Carter 2; gentlemen, Mr Campbell 1, Mr Robinson 2. The consolation prizes went to Miss Ell and Mr R. Campbell. The winners in the lucky number competition were Mrs MeClintock and Mr Gibson. After the supper interval a very pleasant hour was passed in dancing to music supplied by Mrs Robinson and Mr Chegwin. The following were appointed a Committee of Management for the next function: —Mrs Ashby, Mrs Chegwin, and Messrs Robinson and CampbelL Croquet Club. The New Brighton Croquet Club held its fortnightly euchre party in the parish room on Thursday. The prizes were won by Mr and Mrs Meredith, the consolation prizes going to Mrs Foote and Mr Baker. Personal. Mr and Mrs F. Kibblewhite and family are removing shortly to Upper Riccarton. Mr and Mrs L. Ballantyne and family are leaving towards the end of the month for the North Island.
