MISCELLANEOUS CABLES.
Excavations for electric mains in the vicinity of the Sydney Town Hall disclosed a number of coffins and a quantity of human remains. The Town Hall site was formerly a cemetery, which was closed in 1819, when supposedly all the coffins .were removed to Hookwood'. The present discoveries will be left undisturbed. In the West Australian Legislative Assemblv tho Leader of the Opposition (Mr James Mitchell) moved a reduction of £SOOO in the Supply vote, as a protest ngftinst the Government introducing the 44-hour week. iMr E. B. Johnßton, Deputy-Loader of the Country Party, intimated that his party tvould not support the amendment, though not in favour of the 44-hour week. The expedition against the Blacks "to investigate the Douglas Ma w son mystery has been delayed in starting owing to engine trouble on the Hud("erslield. It is expected that it will "bo three days before she is ready to leave Port Darwin. After a lengthy debate, the Queensland Assembly confirmed the principle of day sittings of Parliament. Investigation into the recent entry into the United States of Luis Firpo is promised by the Commissioner-Gen-flral of th& Immigration Bureau (Mr Husband) at the demand of Mr William Chase, president of the New York Civic League. The death roll owing to the collapse of the ginning mill at Ahmedabad (Madras), now totals 17. Mr Christopher Byers, Public Works surveyor in charge of the main trunk road for eight miles from Suva, was found doad. A sum of £4OO, which was in a bag, was missing. .Mr Byers's motor-bicycle -was uninjured.
