A wonia.ii begging-letter writer, who lived iu a £2OOO house, was mentioned at .the one hundred and seventh annual meeting of the ■ London Mendicity Society, over which the Duke oi Wellington presided, at Apsiey House, Piccadilly (the house presented to the victor of Waterloo by the nation). "Tim woman." said Mr Robert Pierpoint, "applied for assistance for her brother, an omnibus conductor, -why was prevented by illness from following his occupation. Enquiries bv the society," he added, "revealed that the woman lived in a nine-roomed house, for which she had just paid ££ooo, that her income was £.324 a year, and that her invalid brother, was the owner of the omnibus which he ran at a profit."
