RICCARTON TRAINING NOTES.

Yesterday wa3 dull and damp, and the No. 1 grass gallop, which was open for fast work, was on the heavy side. Petunia, looking big and lusty, and •with his hind legs considerably enlarged through hitting hurdles, was the first out, and with a light weight up he sprinted half a mile in 52. and did it comfortably. G. Murray-Aynsley worked the majority of bi'j team on the sand, restricting them to half paco. Tiff was the only one to gallop, and he ran six furlongs in 1.22. Rich Prize was going better than 'Escarpment, who was ridden out at the end of half a mile run from a racing start and with light weights up, in 51 2-5. Barn Owl, who "was carrying a "featherweight and was brought home by Hungry Hill, dashed over five furlongs from a flying start in 1.5. Winning Hit, who was carrying a small boy galloped more freely than usual, and, brought home by Armchair, he got to tho end of tiro furlongs in 1.4 3-5. It was a pleasing performance. Palestrina was never off tho bit while galloping six furlongs: the last halfmile took 54 2-5. She is a lazy worker. Deucalion, who was giving some i weight to Rivalry, was beaten by the filly over five furlongs, the last four furlongs being covered in 53. Carawock was given strong pace work, and Star Ranger had a slight advantago of Clareina at the end of fire furlongs run up tho back in 1.5. Brown Lady, who has not had a gallop for a "long while, ran. ftvo furlongs in 1.64-5. Thorndale waa given a short sprint. He hns been sold to a studmaster lound tho bays, and will leave Chokebore for his new homo after tho National meeting. Swindasa took four flights of hurdles very nicely, and is undoubtedly a fine jumper. Loch ion was much too good for Blue Bocks in a schooling bout over fivo flights of hurdles, and though under a strong pull cleared right away from his opponent. The timo was 1.54, and is undoubtedly a fast galloper and a. brilliant jumper. "Warseer was too good for Royal Star over a mile run in 1.52, <uid Lucinette had The Polymnian as a companion in a gallop over six iuylonga that took j Wee to was not all out whilo running | four furlongs in 52 2-5, and Pilliewinkio had Many Kittle as a companion ove'" the same ground, the pair finding no difficulty in covering it in 51 -1-5. Sartist was easily too good for Knocklyn over seven furlongs in 1.34 3-o, and ho looks likely to develop into a veiy useful gelding. Boadieea, who was carrying over 9st>. galloped five furlongs from a moving start in 1.42-5, and did it veij nicely. The Clarenceux mare was picked up at the end of a furlong, which took 13. by "SVinkie's Best, and tho pair ran hoir.e together, but tho mare had her stablemato's measure. Broadivood was too good for Prince Ferouz over six furlongs run in 1.23 2-5. Both geldings were cii'rying wet- . ter weights. ! Sir Ilosebery andi Maunga were com- ! panions in a working gallop over a mile. Sir Rosebery had the Hawke'si Bay gelding's measure three furlongs from homo, and it did not surprise to j see that Alaunga was bleeding when ■ pulled up, as his showing was too bad . to be true. i Charlatan and "VVhipcord were coni- : panions in a schooling gallop over the country. Charlatan looked well, but Whipcord was very light. Charlatan i'ell at the first fence of tho double, but on being remounted he jumped well Whipcord shaped splendidly, i Boomerday, Royal Fame, and Adjutor were companions in a, schooling gallop over the hurdles. Boomerday, who had too'much pace for Lis companions, shaped better than on Saturday, but still left room for improvement. Tho others jumped well., i • Le Fort and Miss Garahce were [ together all tho way in a gallop over a, mile that took 1.524-5, and Lord Leslie had Ophir as a companion while runl ning -half a mile in _s£3-5. j ban for to and Passin' Through were ' associated in a schooling task over si.i :of tho steeplechase fences. They kept together all the way, and g.ive a fine showing; tho only fault to be found wfliL that Sanforte pecked badly on landing over the last fence. The time was 2.2. Both these gelding look in rare fettle. Ciunel Amble and a companion galloped seven furlongs in 1.33*2-5. and Taralga was given strong paoe work twice round on the sand. Cliickwheat beat Revel very easily over five furlongs in 1.<6 3-5, a time that he could liavo improved upon. This gelding Iwis a fine burst of speed, and it is a pity that ho is so bad at the barrier.

About the best bit of schooling seen during the morning was that between Oakleigh and his stablemate Silverton. The pair jumped six of the .steeplechase fences and gave a masterly exhibition. Silverton was kept clos.i inside and Oakleigli scouted wide between the fences. Eventually they landed oyer tho last fence together with both going strongly, tho time being 2.1 for the round. Oakleigh. continues to improve in looks, also ho is nutting more da3h into his work. Silverton, who has never been to Riccarton before, is a big, raw-boned, bay gelding, on© of the lean and hungry-looking sort, probably with a bad constitution, but- he is a nice mover, and on this showing ho has nothing to learn about jumping. Grim Joke was too good for Wrapping over six furlongs run in 1.21.3-0. Paul Pry was given a strong working gallop. He moved well. Cassells, a big and rather heavy looking huuter. had Galway as a companion in a schooling task once round over the country. Galway had rather too much pace for his stablemnte, but tlioy kept' together'all the way and ihc*ir fencing was perfect. Mettle Drift was given a strong working gallop, and -moved very smoothly. Hiero ancl Palencia were on the absent list. Lochella and Pamplona set out to school together over six oil the steeplechase fences. Pamplona, who trotted somewhat .stiffly when warming up prior to tho start, was outjumped by Locholla at tho first fence, a brush, then at the next, the first of the double, he made s. great r;'„ge;e(} leap, ana unshipped his rider. Lochella was pulled up and A. E. Ellis remounting Pamplona, the two started off afresh from the double, and raced together over five fences, the time being 1.22. Lochella gave beautiful exhibition hi how to cross steeplechase fences in the quickest and safest manner possible. Ravenna galloped six furlongs, iho> last five of which took 1.7 2-3. 'ind 'Silent King, who was the last to work*, was given a strong gallop.
