TRADE UNION FUNDS.
TO THE EDITOR OF "THE TRESS." Sir,—'The letter from- the secretary of the Now Zealand Workers' Union possesses some interest,, mainly duo to ' the fact, that its author carefully retrains from offering any comment on my proposal that those handling union funds should bo'placed under a substantial security bond. It matters not "how capable or how stupid the official may bo, ho ought not to be allowed to touch the union's money until the cash, is safeguarded by such a bond. Mr Cook did not. requiro to write that ".the N.Z.W.U. is not the only organisation that suffers from the attentions of dishonest men"; as I clcarlj* indicated that his union had not a monopoly of the rogues. llascaJs are common to almost all organisations, but why not restrict their activities in tho manner' I advocate? Tliero is no reflection -on a' man's honesty when ho is placed under yuch a bond. Contrariwise, there is .reason for believing thafc.a.n honest man would welcome tho ' taking of this step, as affording his fellow-members some solid assurance that their funds could with swfety be entrusted to his care. Tho point 1 wished to make, and which I now repeat, is, that oven.' individual wiio handles union cash should, no matter how highly lie may rate himself, bo compelled to work under a. security bond. I care not who the person may be, nor what organisation he may servo,-? I would insist,;on so treating him, and ' would make sure that I myself, in like circumstances, were so bound. —Yours, CtC "' GUARDIAN. July 29th, 102-1. . "" '
