Two facsimiles of rare books have i been presented to the Auckland 2?ublic Library by Mr Henry Shaw. One is of the first printed book, known as the ! Gutenberg Bible, and the other is of a | beautiful illuminated M.S., '' Hortulus Animac." Kef erring to the first work, Mr Shaw says the Gutenberg Biblo was printed at Mainz between 1450 and 1455. About 200 copios were printed, thirty of these being on vellum. Some forty copies have survived to the present day, but a number are not in perfect condition. In 1910, a French publisher had the idea of publishing an exact facsimile of the perfect copy in the Royal Library at Munich, and about the Bame time a German firm in Leipzig proposed to produce a simi- ! lar rival facsimile. The French proposition did not mature, but the Leipzig firm went on with the work and completed the most perfect and beautiful facsimile of a printed book that the world has ever known. _ The reproduction, like the original, is in two folio volumes of over 600 pages each, and about 100 pages are choicely illuminated in gold and colours. The production was a great and costly undertaking, and all the copies had to be subscribed for before publication. As most copies are now m important libraries, it would soon become a work not easy to procure (states the "NewZealand Herald"). The fine facsimile of the "Hortulus Animae," or "Garden of the Soul," is described as one of the most splendidly-illuminated ' works known to the world. With its : wealth of gold and colour, it is a mag- J nificent book to behold.
