FOOTBALL. Arrangements are now complete for the Southbridge Shield representative fixture between Ashburton (holders) and Hurunui (challengers). Mr L Fallwell was appointed referee for the senior game, and Mr L. "Grieve.will take charge of the second grade representative fixture between Ashburton and South , Canterbury.. The only . other games to be played in the county next Saturday are High School v. Rakaia at the Show Grounds, and Technical v, Methven at Methven, in the third grade. Mr E. Partridge will referee the former game, and Mr TV. Burrows the latter. Encouragement of Music.

At the meeting of the executive of (he A.A.A. held on Tuesday evening, Mr A. P. Raven proposed'that the Association should make itself interested in the running of musical and elocutionary competitions. After some discussion it was resolved to recommend the- Entertainment Committeo of the Association to convene a meeting of those interested in musical competitions. 'Quite six' months ago the running of musical and elocutionary competitions was advocated in these columns. At present quite successful competitions aro held in Mayfield and Willowby, and it is time, that a place like-Ashburton had a strong society for the encouragement of local talent. Another branch of music which should be reorganised is the Orchestral Society which flourished in Ashburton yearß ago, but died a natural death during the war period. General News. Since July Ist the borough authorities have registered 23 motor vehicles, the revenue amounting to £l2 15s. Lambing has commenced on Mr S. Corbett's farm at Wakanui. Already 30 'lambs are to bo seen there. This is exceptionally early for the Ashburton County. As a rule the first lambs of the season are seen early in August. A.A.A, The first meeting of the new executive of the Advance Ashburton Association was held on Tuesday evening, when Mr \V. Kerr presided over a good attendance.

It was unanimously agreed to link up with the Chamber of Commerce, and Mr A. P. Raven was appointed delegate.

It was resolved that the committees be re-elected as at present constituted, with power to add, and that the chairman of the Works and Beautifying Committees be ex officio members of each other's committees. The quorum was set at five members.

Mr E. M. Gabites was appointed to the position of chairman of the "Works Committee in plac« of Mr Kerr.

A motion that the name of the Advisory Committee be "altered to that of Publicity Committee was carried, and Mr McDonald was appointed chairman of the Publicity and Entertainment Committee. The chairman, remarked that. work woiild have to proceed on the gala, which jvould take place in three months' time. The gala, he said, was being run in. conjunction with the fire brigade demonstration.
