The monthly meeting of the South .Canterbury Hospital Board was held yesterday • morning, the Rev. T. W. Potts presiding. Others present were V Mesdames W. iH. Unwin, F. A. Raymond, St. E. Tilbrook, and Messrs W. Geddes, G. Dash, E. H. Hardcastle, and B1 R.Macdonald.

The: medical superintendent (Dr. T. L. Parr) reported that the screening stand purchased from Dr. Cameron had atrived in good condition and bad;been installed. The Hospital now had a complete and very efficient diagnostic plant,' worth, roughly, £ 1200. This had greatly improved the general,, efficiency of the Hospital. The in-patients remaining from May were 78; admitted in Jupe, 83; discharged, 75; remaining to Julv, 86; average occupied beds, 81 ; .4.

Matron A. B. Finlayson reported that the results of the final State examinations showed that Nurses Morton and Tiylor had'passed with honours, and Nurse Collett had also passed. ReSiilts of, the progress examinations were very satisfactory. The master of the Old People's Home reported that the health of the iiimatos had been good, and there were no cot cases. On June 18th and July 3rd the W.C.T.U. visited the Home and gave entertainments, and on July 10th Mrs F. A. Raymond gave a musical afternoon.

Tho treasurer's statement showed a credit of £3993 18s lid, monthly accounts for payment £7831 7s 3d. In addition to. the credit balance, the sum of : £4859 was due on account of Government subsidy, and application had been made for that amount. A further instalment of capital moneys for Waipiata contracts was now due., £2023. It was suggested that this amount should be passed for payment, but that the account be held until the Waipiata Committee actually required the funds, thus saving interest on overdraft. Receipts since last meeting amounted to £5640 17s Bd. -The Finance Committee reported'that tenders had been received for the supply of a steam boiler to duplicate the present installation at Timaru Hospital, aiid it was recommended that the tender of Messrs A. and T. Burt for £246 for boiler, delivered, be adopted. All the reports were adopted.

In the afternoon the Board paid a visit to the TimnTu Public Hospital for the purpose of inspecting the new 'X-ray plant. The plant, which was recently installed, includes the latest improvements, and brings the Timaru Hospital into line with all the up-to-date institutions in New Zealand. Dr. T. L. Parr, medical superintendent, demonstrated the new plant and recently purchased screen to the Board,- and explained the great value of the installation. The Board then made a visit of inspection to the varibus wards and were entertained at , afternoon tea by Matron A. ,B. Finlayson in the nurses' hostel. Inquest. An inquest was held yesterday afternoon, before Mr E. D. Mosley, Coroner, into the death of Richard Thomas Marshall, 12 years of age. * Dr. H. S. Ray said that deceased had ,a fractured pelvis, which had caused complications. At 10 o 'clock on Tuesday night an operation was performed, and at 4 a.m. his condition was considered satisfactory. George Richard Marshall, of Arundel, said that the boy vfas helping him to load logs on to a lorry by means of a rope. Oneklog rolled back and pinned him down. He was conscious, and he sat down- on another log. The logs were about 26 inches thick and 16 feet

long. Later, he was taken to a doctor at Ceraldine. octor

Alexandrina Florence Deverell, deceased's mother, stated that she did not tell him tell him to help in the loading He was brought into the house after the accident.

Arthur Lindsay Deverell said that his wife wiinted the boy to attend school, but the other brother persuaded him to let the boy stay and assist him, in the loading. .

To Sergeant Packer, witness said he had not publicly said that the log was deliberately dropped, and he had not said anything outside which he had not included in his evidence.

- To the Coroner: The whole thing was purely an accident, and he realised that he would not say that one brother would .kill another in cold blood. The Coroner: If it came to my knowledge that you had done so I would be down on you. A verdict was returned that deceased met his death through injuries accidentally received from a falling log, and no blame could be attached to the brother by any reasonable person. Runaway at Railway Station. At about 1.30 p.m. yesterday carriers, cyclists, railwavmen, and cusual pedestrians were seen rushing from the station tpwards Strathallan street,, all ejaculating the word "Whoa" in.an excited manner. The commotion was caused by three horses attached to a dray taking fright and v dashing off among the traffic at high speed. Things certainly looked exceedingly dangerous, as Strathallan street was full of taxis and pedestrians making, for the 1.40 p.m. express- .Just as. the . runaways reached the corner near the railway crossing, the leading horse • stumbled .and.fell to the ground. The-.other two crashed on. top of it, .and the dray, in a sadly damaged condition, topped the lot. Horses,- harness, and dray were untangled after a struggle, and it was fo.und that none, of . the animals had been seriously hurt. An amusing side incident was the. sight of an elderly lady hanging on to a motorcycle;which had slipped.its brakes when left on the incline, and, was, pulling her down the hill in spite of her attempts to stop it. Finally a bystander rushei up, and applied .the brakes, while the lady gasped, "Lor, but that did give me a turn." TEMUKA. At Tuesday's meeting of the Temuka High School Committee, Mr W. J. Cartwriglit was-appointed secondary assistant vice Sir Arnold; yyho lias resigned. Mr Cartwight has nad eleven years' experience,'-and has. for the past two and a half years been at the Shirley School dn Christchurch. Mr Cartwright, who is not unknown to South Canterbury, has taken a prominent part in football and athletics at Canterbury College, and should be an acquisition to Temuka ■ in that direction. r
