Mr J. M. Dobson returns to Christchurch this week, after spending a few weeks with Mr S. V. Jennings (Kap.i hoe, West Coast). Quite the most successful ball for many years was held in the Athenaeum on i'riday evening, when the gentlemen were the guests of the ladies at a Leap Year ball. The splendid music rendered by Bradford's Orchestra from' Christchurch contributed largely to the success of the evening. BACHELORS' BALL AT GLENTUNNEL.

The bachelors of the South Malvern district held their annual ball on Fri dav evening in the Glentunnel Hall, which was tastefully decorated in the shape of a marquee with the colours of the bachelors, orango and blue. The Grand March was led by the secretary, Mr C. C. Pearson, and Miss Maguire, of Christchurch, who wore an uncommon dress of vieux rose satin. The chairman, Mr G. Kenny, and committee, had left undone nothing that could increase the suettess of the ball. A daintv supper was served in the supper room, which was also decorated in orange and blue. The music was supplied by the local orchestra, Mrs Owen Messri R. Longstaff, and N. Juggernaut, extras being played by Misses I. and E. Gilmour, and Miss White. BALL AT PREBBLETON.

On Friday evening a most successful fancy dress and mask ball was teld in the Prebbleton Hall in favour or Miss Smith, the No. 5 candidate in the Queen Carnival. The hall had been artistically decorated with greenery and streamers of yellow paper, this being the chosen colour of the little candidate. Yellow fans decorated with huge black cats were placed at intervals upon the walls, while these domestic pets were also to be seen in various poses on a yellow trellis-v»rk fence in front of the stage. The varied and picturesque costumes of tho dancers were a joy to behold, and there were few indeed who were able to recognise their best friends, even after a close scrutiny. Many novelty dances were introduced during the evening, including the streamer dance, Cinderella dance, and balloon dance, the winning eoup>e in the last-named being Miss G. Campion and Mr Pickering. Spirited dance music was provided by Mrs Hammond. Miss Mabel Griffiths and Mr Griffiths. Prizes for the most original costumes were awarded to Mrs Yeatman (Grannie), and Mr Hobson (Baker), while an Indian Chief and his squaw in the persons of Mr A. Proudlock and Miss Maud Griffiths were given the prizes for tho most effective dresses. A special prize for a local person, who successfully concealed his identity until the unmasking took place, was won by Mr Cyril Streeter as Barney Google. Mr J. Smith made an efficient Master of Ceremonies.

The Eome correspondent of the "Daily Mail" states that Monsignor Pierami, officiating at the Church of Santa Prassede, refused to administer communion to two women wearing lownecked and sleeveless dresses. The priest publicly reprimanded the delinquents for the immodesty, of their dress.

A very pretty wedding of considerable interest to many is orth Canterbury people was celebrated recently at St. Barnabas' Church, Fendalton, the Rev; H.- S. Leach ' 'officiating, when I3ruce, younger son of Mr and Mrs Andrew Todd, of "Wsiipara Downs," was married to Nell,- eldest daughter of Mrs W. Buss, Fendalton and of the late Air Buss of "Soargill Hills." The bride, who was given away by her uncle, Mr George Buss, of Fairlio, looked charming in ivory georgette and lace. Her tulle veil,, which formed a train, was held with a circlet of orange blossom, and she carried ft shower bouquet. The bridesmaids were Miss Kathleen %and Miss Hillary Buss. The. former wore a draped frock of rust colour chiffon velvet and the latter old gold chiffon velvet. Their panne hats were trimmed with Oriental coloured flowers and they earned posies to tune with their frocks..

The bridegroom wan attended by Mr Thomas Tothill as best man and Mr Crossleigh Dampier Crossloy as groomsman. '"■'.' .V " After the ceremony a reception wa9 held at "Braemore," the home of the bride. Mra Buss woi,-e a handsome frock of black marocain relieved with white and a smart hat of black moire lined with white. Mrs Todd, the bridegroom's mother, wore a draped frock of black marocain with becoming black hat. Miss Norah Buss wore a navy gabardine and a small navy hat, relieved with salmon pink. Miss Joyce Buss wore a navy fiock with touches of cardinal and a black hat. Later Mr and Mrs Bruce Todd left on their wedding tour, the bride wearing a striking frock of beige marocain and a smart hat to match. ■ CHAMBERS—WINCHESTER. In the Southbridge Presbyterian Church' recently, the Rev. T. G. Butler solemnised the marriage of Mr William J. L. Chambers, West Melton, -to Miss Dorothy Amy Winchester daughter of Mr.and- Mrs : Henry Winr Chester, Lakeside., The bride's cousin, Miss Down, was organist. The bride was becomingly attired in cream brocaded satin marocain," with" radium" lace sleeves, and side drapings, trimmed with pearls. Sho wore a tulle veil and carried a shower bouquet of hot-house flowers.'

.The bridesmaid, Miss Phyllis Winchester, wore blush pink crepe de chine, trimmed with silver lace; She was accompanied by Miss Iris Chambers. Mr Russell Chambers attended the bridegroom, and Mr Herbert Curragh was best, man. After the. ceremony the wedding breakfast was partaken of by about one hundred guests in the Lakeside Memorial Hall. The guests were received by Mrs Winchester, dressed in black satin, and Mrs Chambers, in nigger-brown marocain. The Rev. T. G, Butler proposed, the health of the bride and bridegroom, Mr J. T. Parkin that of the bride's parents and grandmother, and Mr R. J. Parkin, of the parents of the bridegroom. In the evening an enjovabte dance was held in the hall. The bride's poing-away dress was a naw blue tailored cstume. with smart black hat, relieved with white.

The weekly meeting of the Railway 'Ambulance Brigade was held at the District Offices. Christchurch Railway Station. A member reported having rendered first aid whilst on public duty during the week. The evening was devoted to a course of stretcher drill and to treatment of fractured limbs. Superintendent Purdom acted as supervisor.

Miss Rosie Lang was on Wednesday evening the guest of honour at a "kitchen evening" in the Saltwatei Creek Schoolroom. The function took the form of a social—cards, games, singing and dancing being enjoyed, the music for the latter being supplied by Misses Mavis Lang, Katie and Bertha Eder and Mr Baden Powell. Miss Lans: was the recipient of numerous useful gifts. The evening was brought to a close bv the sineing of "For She s a Jollv Good Fellow" and "Auld Lang Svne." Those present wore Mrs (x. CHILDREN'S FANCY DRESS BALL

The Springston South Hall was gay with streamers, and foliage on the occasion of a school children's dress ball. The following were awarded prizes:—Best-dressed girl, Hazel Greaves (Grandma's Days); best-dress-ed boy, Frank Hewitt (Goblin); most orginal girl, Mona. Carter (Grizzly Bear); most original boy, Lester Henderson (All Black Footballer); special prize, Miriam Cook (Egyptian Lady). The judges were Mesdames Wright, Simpson, and Bartram. The lucky-spot waltz .was won.by Miss Mariam Cook and Ernest Day. Prizes for boy and girl not attending the school were won by J. Terry (Bridegroom), and Emma Tyson (Fairy). Music was provided by Miss C. Ryan and Mr H. Terry.
