ASHBURTON.
PERSONAL. At yesterday's meeting of the Ashburton A. and P. Association the chairman (Mr Andrew Brown) made refer ence to the death of one of the county's most prominent residents, Mi T. Blackley (Rakaia), whose decease had been a great blow. Members stood out of respect for the deceased member. A motion of sympathy with ? T r W. J. Doak and family in their recent bereavement was also carrie'd.
At yesterday's meeting of the Ashburton A. and P. Association photographs of Mr H. Morris and the late Mr T. E. Bullock, at times vice-presi-dents of the Association, were presented for hanging in the gallery. A welcome was extended to Colonel J. Studholme at yesterday's meeting of the Ashburton A. and P. Association.
Mr Robert Donn, who died at Hamilton the other day from injuries received in an accident, was for*many yeafs a resident of Ashburton, and was a brother of Mr James Donn: For a considerable time Mr Donn was a member of the Ashburton Volunteer Firo Brigade, and represented the brigade in various teams' events at a number of demonstrations With his brother he held the record for the twomen ladder rescue even*. Mr Donn was very well known and highly respected. Nurse Nolson, who succeeded Nurse McKennty as Plnnket Society county nurse, hag commenced her duties. Borough School. At the monthly mee'tiag of the Ashbnrt n Borough School, Mr John Watson presided. The Elucation Board reported *hat authority hua been given for repairs to be carried out around the school. The Board notified that Mr J. Gray had been appointed to take charge of the school in place of Mr S. Irwin. It was explained that a permanent headmaster could not be sent down for about two months. Correspondence was received from the Technical School Board stating that it would be necessary for the schools to appoint a School Committees' represen tative on the Board. A meeting of delegates from the various school committees will be held at the Technical School early in August in order to appoint a representative. Mr W. G. Hillier is the retiring representative. The financial statement showed a bank balance of £lO 12s 7d, and a credit in the improvement fund account of £lO3 6s lid. -. General News. At yesterday's meeting'of the Ashburton A. and P. Association correspondence was received from Mr John Bonifant, jun., indicating that the members of the Bonifant fmaily wished to give a 20-guinea cup as a memorial to their father, for most points in the sheep classes. At yesterday's meeting of the committee of the A. and P. Association, the Chamber of Commerce was granted the use of the Association's rooms, and Mr Andrew Brown was appointed to represent the Association on the j Chamber. Technical and High Schools. At yesterday's meeting of the High School Board of Governors, over which Mr Chas. Eeid presided, the suggestion that Technical_and High Schools should bo controlled by one body was brought up ; for discussion. j A letter from the Director of Education stated that the two schools were to be under the control of the Board of Governors, with the possible addition of two members representing the local school committees, and two representing industries. The combined schools would be under one principal, whose special duty would be with regard to the full-time day classes. The combined schools would provide general, agricultural, commercial, industrial, and domestic sources, the combined staff to be engaged in teaching to pupils in any of the above courses the subjects for which they are qualified. The allocation of classes and courses to the various buildings was to be a matter for local suggestion and arrangement. He could not state exactly -when he could be in Ashburton. As soon as possible he would try to arrange a date on which the matter of amalgamation could be discussed with the Board. It was resolved to postpone discussion of the matter until a conference between the Board and the Director of Education had been arranged. Plunket Society. At the monthly meeting of the Plnnket Committee there were present:— Mesdames J.Laing (chaif), H. Hunter, W. Lane, A. H. Barnett, G. Fisher, P. L. Porter, A. Gregory, H. A. Bilcliff, E B. Newton, A. Bushell, J. T. Thomas, A; A. Fookaj Miss Gates, and Sister Mildred. The nurse's report stated that during the month 101 vißits had i been paid to homes, and 531 to the office by mothers and children. Thero had been 32 new cases. The nurses j had visited 10 children in nursing homes, and this practice was a great j help to nurses, who could see town and ; country cases before they left for | their homes. Subscriptions and donations'amounted to £7 Gs 4d. The j country nurse reported:—Mount Som- ; ers: Visits to rooms 9, to homes 4. new case 1. -Methven: Visits to rboms 46, new cases. 2. A' circular regarding the conference to be j aeld in Wellington in September stated , that each branch was entitled to ap- i point one delegate and -an extra one for each resident Plunket nurse employed. Mesdames V. P. Boot, Buxton, and Matthews were appointed new nxen-bers of-the committee. High School Board. At yesterday's meeting of the Ashburton High School Board of Governors Mr C. Reid presided. The headmaster's report stated that the school roll was now 196. The average attendance for the month had been 184.3, or 94 per cent, of the roll. He was pleased to report that the school had succeeded in raising more than the £IOO it undertook to raise on behalf of the purchase of the new playing area. Thanks were due to all who had helped. A vote of thanks was passed to the Old Pupils' Association, which had col. lected £686 6s Wd towards the library. It was resolved to leave over the matter of increased accommodation until the architect's report was received. . - A suggestion was received from the Director of Education that both parents and pupils should vote on the matter of electing Board members.— lt was resolved to agree with the suggestion. The Board supported the suggestion of an Education Court at the forthcoming Dunedin Exhibition, and the headmaster was instructed to work with the promoters in the matter. ' An offer of £IOO was made for a 1 niece of land for a school playing ■ area, and in the event of the Board's proposal not being accepted, the chairman and Messrs Galhraith and Bow-.
