A Dominion sportsman at present in Sydney told me that Wnrmald seldom leave., a liorse, and thev have to tail to J'id of him. It is a pity some of our hurdle and steeplechase riders do not take a leal out of his book, as a light tap sends some of t.liem out of the saddle. F. (iray enhanced his reputation greatly by the dashing manner in which lie piloted Chrysostom in hi> successes at Kandwick. and tlie Xe*v Zealander has been cripaged to rido Palula in the Victorian Grand National Hurdles next month. Riccarton's quota in point of numbers for tl.c Wellington Racing Club's Winter Meeting next month is not- a strong one, but those engaged in the flat events may pay their way. They are Barn Owi, Winning Hit, Prince I'Vrouz, Boadicea. Thomda-le, Pit-lie. Ourpentier, Knocklyn, and Markie. Le Fort and Royal Star will do duty over hurdles. The Hawke's Bay Jockey CAitb will commence its Winter Meeting• to-day. The fields in moot of the events are not very imposing, but with 110. horses engaged of outstanding merit, t'lie various events bear that open appearance which übujUlv attracts a big gathering to the convincing ground. Mahurti is top-weight in the Hawke's Bav Steeples and will probably prove that her place is in better . company than she is meeting at Hastings. The injury received by Penury Rose at Wingatut lias been causing trouble, and R. Knox's hurdler is still on the easy list. Reports from Feather3ton are to the effect tha£ P. Hazelman is having further cause for anxiety with the imported gelding Black Ronald. S. Walls is now on his way to Sydnev with the jumper Pittsworth. Others of J. Williamson's team, in charge of their trainer, will leare Auckland about June 9th for the same destination, and tho party may include Pavo and Charlady, owned by Mr H. Friedlander. Mr Percy Miller, who has put. more money intb the breeding j industry in the last few years than any other man in the Southern .Hninisphesa, and whose Kiora Stud shelters the English stallions, Magpie, Demosthenes, Nassau, and Sarchedon, has purchased the high-class English horse, Saltash, from Lord Astor, says the Sydney. "Referee." Salt-ash won liis first race as a three-year-old at the Ascot, meeting last year, taking the Waterford Stakes of one mile, valued at- £ll7B. He next start was the Eclipse Stakes, at Sandown, and ridden by Brennan, he won that valuable race, worth £8735, easily from that good filly Teresina, and l>uncan Gray'third, .while half a dozen of the best horses in England finished behind him. At Goodwood Saltash •continued his winning, vein, and with odds laid on him, ran home a winner in the Gatwick Stakes, L',iniles. In all, Saltash won £11,138 in" stakes that, season. s

Stockdill, and that Mr linden had refunded half hia foe to tho club. It was decided to thank these donor 3 for their generosity. Tho report of the recent race meeting showed that the meeting had been a great success from a racing point of view. There wore no accidents, and the rising was clean and interesting throughout. On the financial aide it wis not so good, but when all outstanding subscriptions ware collected tie club would show a small credit balance. A few small accounts were passed for payment, and some other business ww held over until'a future mcetjng.
