SEWERAGE SCHEME.
. —-♦ INCLUSION OF .NEW AREAS, St. Martins residents recently made application to the Christchurch Drainage Board for inclusion in the £700,000 loan area. < At the meeting of the Board last night the Finance Committee recommended the inclusion of ' St. Martins in the special rating area provided there were sufficient funds available out of the £700,000 loan to reticulate it after the completion of the works in the rating area as at present constituted. Should the above proposal not meet with the approval of the St. JMart;»s residents tne district could .be constituted a separate special rating area and a poll taken to provide the funds necessary for the sewering of the area. The committee also recommended the adoption of that policy with future applications for inclusion in the £700,000 loan area, such applications to be dealt with in order of receipt. In reply to Mr W. J. Walter, the chairman said it was proposed that outside areas, if admitted later, should be done so in priority of application. Mr H. G. Livingstone said it had been suggested that the Board should secure power to increase the loan by special order to provide for the cost of future extensions That would obviate the necessity of taking another loan poll over the whole area. The chairman said the present loan authorisation had already been allocated. New areas could not be admitted' until the work in- the present special area was completed. . Mr E. 11. Hamilton said" that Cashmere would very , likely want to come into the special area. The chairman said it had also been suggested that New Brighton would want to come in. , The Board authorised {he chairman to have a Bill promoted giving power to raise the money required without taking a poll. I Pipe-laying Tenders. Tenders for the first of the pipe-lay-ing contracts were received and' considered by the Board in committee, but no report was made in the, meantime. Messrs McTaggart Bros. " and party : wrote proposing that the work of | ipe- ' laying should be entrusted to a cooperative party, who would undertake to carry it out with speed and accuracy, and with a guarantee against stoppages, etc. Should the Board favour- | ably entertain a co-operative proposal I the writers could undertake to organise an effective party, a great many of j whom had had experience at Oroiigoi orongo..; In addition, they could give such guarantees for the faithful carry- : ing out of the work as the Board might .desire. Mr H. G. Livingstone said that if. a co-operative tender was received the j Board were bound to consider it. _ | Mr A, T, Smith said he had advised j a party to put in a tender. ' Mr Livingstone moved that a reply be sent that a co-operative tender would ■ be welcomed. ! This was seconded by Mr A. T. | Smith. | The chairman said that something' wight be done in the way of providing the material required for the job. Mr H. J. Otley said the co-operative party could give an order on the amount due to them to cover the cost of the material required. . ] Mr Livingstone's motion was carried, j ===== !
