PAPANUI PARK.
YESTERDAY'S LOAN POLL.
PROPOSAL CARRIED.
The poll of ratepayers in the special area affected was taken yesterday on .& proposal to raise a loan of £3250 to purchase and improve an area of land at Papanui for a local park, and resulted in the proposal being carried by 137 votes to 95. The land proposed to be acquired has an area of over seven acres, but provision is made for the purchase of additional land adjoining. The situation of the area is westwards of the North railway line between the line and St. James's avenue. There were 571 qualified voters on the roll, and 237 exercised their rights. The voting was as follows For ••• .. 137 Against ' ~ :. 95 Informal .. . 5 Majority for proposal 42 Declaration of Eesult. ' Immediately upon the declaration of the poll by Mr J. S. Neville, returning officer, three hearty cheers were given ! 1 ' s .j >ark and also for the Rev. T. N. Griffin, hon. secretary of L Surgessfis' Association. Mr Griffin, m responding, thanked the large number .present for their vote. He said he felt that the poll reflected to the credit of the St. James's Park rating area. The poll had been a large one, and the majority substantial. The results would do much to give Papanui its right place as a leading suburb of the City of Christchurch. He felt that all who had worked for the proposal had done so with the sole purpose of promoting the best interests of the Papanui district. Mr E. H.
