TRAMWAY TRACKS
* alterations in the SQUARE. With reference to the proposed alterations to the tramway tracks i" Cathedral square and Worcester street West., as brought forward in the Works and Traffic Committee's report at the LY.nmway Board meeting on Monday, n representative of "The Press" made enquiries yesterday from the City Council authorities a.s to how tiiev viewed the matter. The result was an unqualified endorsement of the Tramway Hoard's proposal and a statement to the effect that the Tramway Board and City Cmiicil always worked in harmonv in these matters. The Mayor (Mr J. A. Flesher) said the proposal was an improvement 011 the present lay-out, and would make for better clearances <vt certain points. It involved special work, but as the Tramway Board could go where it liked with its' tracks, it was no concern o! the Council. The Board, however, as an act of courtesy, always submitted : ts plans to the Council before proceeding with them Air J. W. Beanland. who is a Councillor atid also a member of the Tramway Board, snid that personally he was against The Square being altered again, as there had been so much work done there recently. He thought it would be better if left for a while. However, as the majority of ihc Board had decided to go on with the work, he was sure it would be one of mutual arrangement with the C.ty Council, and the result would be of advantage to the Board as well as to the Council. The alteration would make for the better working of the tram-airs at holiday time, and would give more room at certain corners. The work would not oe put in hand for six or eight months, at least. Mr Frank Thompson, general manager of the Tramway Board. f>aid the .uonrd had to make application for nn Order-iti-Council before proceeding with such work as that decided 011 on Monday, which application had to be advertised. Hie Board did not wait for the City Council to act, but sent along its p'ans its a matter of courtesy. The relations between the two bodies had been good, and he thought the Council would be glad of the change. In addition there was a provision in the Act which stated that if a given number of electors disapproved, the matter had to be submitted to a vote of ratepayers.
