DEFAULTING OFFICIALS.

TO THE EDITOR Of "THE THESS."

Sir,—Another trade union official in the North Island is reported as having been imprisoned for failing to note the difference) between "mcum" and "tuum." Still, no definite word of the appointment of a Government auditor to safeguard union funds. Oh, Lord! How long? Will Christchurch have the distinction of supplying tho next candidate for free board and lodging at the country's expense? Who can tell? —Y'ours, etc., ■ I.C.U. Juno 21st, 1024. WASTE IN PUBLIC SERVICE. TO THE EDITOB 0? "THE PRESS."

Sir—l saw a letter in "The Press" the other day on the above subject and a correspondent "Uurgenti" seemed to think if anyone knew of any suoh instances they' should bring them to light. Well if, "Urgent"'will'visit my part of the world 1 can show him a very deplorable waste. On a beach in a certain part of Canterbury there lie some hundreds, if not thousands of poumb worth <of railway line and sleepers, simply going to waste. These lines have at some time been used evidently for ballasting shingle, but must have been abandoned for some years, for one line is almost completely submerged in a heavy shingle bank whilst the other line is partially covered. They are of apparently good sound material and would be. welcomed with joy by the farmers in the wicinity to use for fencing material, and other useful purposes on the farm. If the Government were to auction this material, I'm quite sure it would find a ready sale and prove a boon to the farmers in the neighbourhood, as to most of us the present price of fencing material is- prohibitive.—Yours, A POOR COCKY.
