RAILWAY BALL AT SCARGILL.

The second annual ball organised by the permanent staff of the New Zealand Railways on the Waipara-Ethelton section was held at Scargill in the Alexandra Hall on Friday evening. The inaugural ball held last season was a great success, and that the event has greatly increased in popularity was abundantly evidenced by the attendance on Friday evening, which eclipsed last year's record, and the function proved to be one of the most brilliant and successful of its kind ever held in the district. A special train, connecting with the evening train from Christchurch, was run from Waipara for the occasion, and was well patronised, bringing a large crowd of visitors from the various stations en route. The arrangements for the ball, which were carried out in a most excellent manner by a local committee, consisting of Messrs Morris, Ryan, and Leopold, left nothing to be desired, and this committee, together with the local ladies who superintended the refreshments, and the joint secretaries, Messrs F. G. Henderson and A. Grammer, is deserving of much praise. The hall was prettily decorated with a multi-coloured scheme of hundreds of streamers and festoons, which blended perfectly with the colours of the many beautiful dresses worn by the ladies. The floor was in perfect order, but the amount of space available proved rather inadequate for the comfortable accommodation of all the dancers. Altogether about 160 people were present, and over 40 couples promenaded in the grand march. Excellent music was provided by Hunnibell's Jazz Band from Rangiora, and the extras were played by Messrs Terris (Christchureh), Coleman, and Dowling (Hawarden), Fairbairn, and Greig. Messrs J. Morris and W. Hall carried out the duties of M.C.'s efficiently. The special train left on the return journey at the conclusion of the ball, about 2.30 a.m., and special thanks are due to the train crew by whom it was manned —Messrs A. Ferguson, F. Henderson, and J. Butler.
