BURGLARS ACTIVE
During week-end two shops in Burnett°street; were burglariously entered. At Mr G. Argyle's printing house a search of the eash-box was made, and 25s appropriated. The shop nest'door, occupied by Messrs Chapman and Davis, house decorators, was also visited, but although attempts were made to get into the office, the burglar or burglars were not successful, and left without disturbing the premises. Boxing. To-morrow ovening the Ashburton Athletic Club will hold another of its popular tournaments, when the MidCanterbury championship meeting wi'l be held. The entries are exceptionally good, and it has been deckled to start the tourney at 7.30 p.m. The general public will be admitted at a nominal fo'c The boxers to be seen will be contesting for places in their respective district teams for the Centre championships which will take place next month. Miniature Rifle Shooting. The competitions of the Ashburton Miniature Rifle Club were continued on Saturday evening, when the "hotty" button was shot for. G. McKenzie and V. R. King each scored a possible, and McKenzie won the shoot off with ?,i, King scoring 30. The best scores for the button were: G. McKenzie So, ■\V K King 85, J. Meeking 34, C. Simpson 33, C. Storrier 32, F. Clark 31, D. F. Keir 3], and E. C. Baker 31. The gate takings for the two days this year were £lll 12s, as compared with £llß Os 6d last year. The sheep-guessing competition realised £ll 17s Cd, as compared with £ls 5s last year. The club will havo soriously to consider better conditions for t.ho art and cookery exhibits. Both the rooms in which these sections were displayed became filled with dust before the show was over, and while tho cooking was spoilt altogether, the dust on the fine specimens of needlework which were displayed this year must havo taken away from the household value of the exhibits without taking into consideration the possible sale of the cushions, etc. The club next year could possibly show tho cooking and needlework away from the Arcade altogether.
