North, of Dunedin, died suddenly in Dunedin yesterday. The Rev. J. J. North leaves this morning to attend the funeral.

A verv enjoyable card party was held at the Edgeware croquet pavilion, the other afternoon, when the lady president (Mrs J. IX Colville) entertained the members. The first prize was won by Mrs F. East, «nd thesecond prize by Mrs Papps. Amongst those present were Mesdames Good, Nightingale, Purse, Josling, East, McCulloch, Faulkner, Knight, Papps," Tavlor, Loiimer, Clark, Begg, Oolson, D-alton Bennington, Brazier, Frost, Parish," Chadwick, and Bcanland. On Saturday evening the members of the Shirley Methodist Choir met at the residence of Mr and Mrs W. "W. D. Marks (Bank's avenue, Shirley), > to bid farewell to Mr C. H. Ralph, who is shortly leaving for "Wanganui. Mr Marks eulogised Mr Ralph's work in the choir and presented him with a sil-ver-mounted umbrella as a slight toTren of the esteem and appreciation of the choir members. The Rev. F. T. Read also spoke of Mr Ralph's good work Mr Ralph briefly responded, and nil present joined in singing "For He's a Jolly ; Good Fellow." The evening was passed in games, competitions and music, and the singing of "Auld Lang Syne" brought a pleasant gathering Ut a close. Mr Ralph has received many tokens of regard from the teachers and scholars of the Sunday school and from his class, A most enjoyable afternoon party was given by Mrs G. C. Z. Harris at her home on the Esplanade, Sumner, for her daughter, Noraj who is shortly to be married. Mrs Harris was assisted by her daughters, Misses Nora and Ila Harris, in the entertainment of her guests, and the : time passed ■ very quickly with musical items and competitions. The drawing-rooms were decorated with beautiful chrysanthemums, and a dainty afternoon tea was served. Mesdames. Quarrell and Crowley and R. A social arranged by the T/oolston Methodist Choir was held recently in the schoolroom. A fine programme of games, competitions, and musical.items had been arranged by Mr B. Makin, and the male members of the choir. Mr S. McHarg and Miss Moore, on behalf of the Sunday school teachers, presented Miss M. Dalziel with a Bible and bouquet of flowers, and spoke of the high esteem she had gained as a teacher. Mr S. McHarg also welcomed several new members who had recently joined the church and choir. Songs were given by Misses G. Lomas and Haig, and Mr and Mrs 0. Gallop; piano solos by Miss Thome and Mr D McHarg; and a clarinet solo bv Mr Barker. Miss - Bergman, Mrs Gallop, and Mr D. McHarg played the accompaniments Tho Saturday afternoon cabaret teas which are being held at Dixieland promise to become a popular fixture for the winter months. About 30 counles attended on Saturdry afternoon, and danced' to the excellent music supplied by Sutherland's orchestra. Among those present were:—Mesdames M. There were unmistakable signs and sounds of high revelry at tho Winter Garden last night, when a delightful children's plain and fancy dress party, in aid of -St. George's Hospital, was held, and proved an unqualified success. DANCE AT DIXIELAND.

If the greatest compensation of a school teachers' somewhat unenviable lot is the loyalty of his former pupils, the membeis of the Marist Brothers' teaching staff should have been happy men last night, when tin exceptionally successful complimentary social was tendered to them at Dixieland by their "old boys." The Carlton Cafe had for the nonce been converted into a card-room, and here a large euchro tournament was held. The ballroom was taxed to its utmost capacity with dancers, for whom the music was provided by Sutherland's Jazz Band. Supper was served in the lounge, where the tables were decorated with marguerite daisies. Amongst those present were the Rev. Father Hanrahan, Rev. Extra seating accommodation had to be provided at the Jellieoe Hall last night, wh*en the members of the Eroica Club, of -which Mr Ernest Empson is patron, and Miss Alice Carter president, held an "ensemble evening."
