GOLF.

NOTES OF THE DAY.

(By Jigger.) LOCAL CLUB FIXTURES.

Shirley-Monday, June 16th-Ladies' Club. Bogey Match. Saturday, June _m Fourth r:und - Captain's Trophy. Hagley-Tuesday, June "U^ I***"' 1 ***"' C £t" Qualifying round for the Saturday June SUt-Men's Club,. First round of Meares Cup for seniors and Hagley Cup for juniors. Arondale-Saturday, June 2lst. Men's Club. First round of Harding Cup. Harewood-Week-end . Four-ball, best ball Bogey Competition. It. C. Butters, ex-Shirley professional, lias opened a golf school in Earle's Buildings in Wanganui, where he is giving evening instruction in addition to his duties as professional to the Belmont Club. E. J. Pumphrey, the Shirley player who secured a one at Muggeridge's a week or so ago, holed his mashie approach for a two at Briggs's at the week-end. Briggs's is 310 yards. The final of the Borthwick -Vase, between A. L. Cropp and J. Dolph, was played during the weekend. Cropp was conceding six strokes, and had trouble striking his gait and was too many down before he began playing steadily, whereas = Dolph played carefully from the start of the mate* and reached the 18th green 2 up. The golf throughout was hardly up to either player's true form,. The programme for the open amateur New Zealand championship meeting, to be held at Hamilton in September, is to come up before the Golf Council for consideration at an early uatc. ■ The players at Shirley' who tied for the junior medal in the bogey handicap on June 7th, F. A. Brittan, H. T. Milnes, and W. J. "Watson, playedoff on last Saturday, and W. J. Watson won.

A writer of experience says:—"Only the outstanding loft-handers can use the wood with certainty, but practically all can use iron clubs with a ..good deal of success.' A. .right-handed beginner starts to correctly use his wooden clubs much sooner than .he does his iron or mashie. Yet a left-hander is just the. opposite. From the tee he is extremely erratic, but once away from there would hold his own .with most players of much greater experience.'? That either ■ extreme in a golfer's game—-good or bad—has a tendency to divert the mind into channels other than natural, is no longer mere humour. On a Christchusch course the other day a young man's game was proving vexing, although that is not the adjective used by him in referring to it, and a five-foot putt, entirely unexpected, brought.prompt elation; To the cup he hurried to recover his ball! Picked up the .flag r stick, placed his putter, blade tip, in the"-cup and strode'off proudly, dragging the flag with. him. Quickly he. realised that something was not as it. should be, and, luckily before. Tiis op-ponent-glanced- back, • he 'made the proper substitution. Hagen (says an American exchange) is a. fine golfer, but his main assets are an-ideal temperament and an ideal putting stroke. He.is rarely beset by fluttering duck fits': A firm, immovable a light,., unhurried putting stroke are the twd main causes for his! •work'on the greon. : He h%Ver • jabs or stabs or hurries the putting ■' blade, •Thc.ro is.,no sudden hit or tap. .."The putter seems to glide through the. ball at even, pace, without... any sign- of punch.. And the ball doesn't, jump away from tho blade with the spin that frequently pops it out of the cup for so many golfers.. ■ . •. ■ It .is rumoured that Mr and Mrs J. C. Templer will shortly take up their residence in Invcrcargill. Christchurcti has recently recruited >a low handicap player from the southern city, but it looks as if we will be getting "the worst of the deal ".if we give two good players in exchange. ' However. Mr Templer is on the staff of the Bank of New South- Wales, and has to go whero his transfer sends him. Mrs Templer is better known to golfers as Miss N. E. Wright, of Timaru, and when she is in form is'probably the best lady golfer in New Zealand.' She was New Zoaland lady champion in 1919, 1920, and 1921, and at Shirley last Eastef she won the Canterbury Championship for the; fifth year in succession. Christchurch golfers will learn with sincere regret that these two. popular good golfers aro leaving.
