The centre of the former travelled northward of the Bay"..of; Plenty apparently from the direction of the Kermadec islands, while the latter .coming from the north-west, traversed the . northern districts, while the centre was in the vicinity of Awanui. The officer in charste of the wifeless, station observed and corrected the reading of the standard barometer, which showed a minimum of 28-60 inches. \ It had fallen from 80.84 inches on May 13th, and recovered to 30.6 inches on Majr lOfcibt, little itl the .atmospheric followed over the Dominion until this endi. of., the. month, but on May 25th a remarkable | storm of heavy rain and fierce easterly | calea visited "the northern and East' Coast districts of the North Inland. Although the barometer was high and , did not move more two-tenths of an inch during th© storm, was evir : dent that it was -the edge of the' cyclonic area operating northward- of the Dominion and 1 rexiqarkable oscillaj tion of pressure was - reported ' from the Chatham Islands, .where {he . barometric pressure reached 30.62 inches on May 26th. "The occurrence isone of the most noticeable meteorological events , recorded in this country for a long time," the report concludes. ' "H»re©' westerly ' disturbances of iroderafe intensity passed in SoutV, culminating on May Ist, May 10th, and May 31st. The temperatures were mild and the skies more cloudy than usual, but local differences m«k6 further brief generalisation impossible.
