WELLINGTON, May 15. .J Mr Gilbert Laing-Meason, who was .i 72 years of age, died last evening. He ] was an able engineer, who. specialised j in river work ; drainage, and irrigation. During the past 25 years he had been engineer to the Hutt Biver Board. The late'Mr Laing-Meason was also during that period engaged by many .local authorities in draining and river .worK? and, also in the construction of bridges. So far as the Hutt Valley is concerned, the district owes its salvation from flood (very largely to his engineering ability. In the-first place he was responsible for the' designing '<. and erection of the stop banks which have' thoroughly justified their " erection. Since then his efforts have been directed to straightening,. deepening, .-. and generally controlling the river, and these efforts have proved highly sue-; cessful. The lower reaches were placed under control two or three'years ago. and'the work-in the upper ' reaches is,' according to a definite plan; steadily proceeding. ..'..-
