FIRE.
OUTBREAK IN FENDALTON.
Quite recently, a" portion of Fcndalton in the Wnimairi County was included in the Christchurcli Fire Board's district, and last evening the.City Brigade received a call" to this area, for the first time. The- call was . reecn ed at "9.1 p.m. to No. 2& Jackson's road, Fendalton, a four-roomed dwelling owned by Mr W. H. Marley, and occupied by Mr A. McConachy. . ; Tli© fire had a good hold by the time the brigade arrived and the lack of water made the efforts of the firemen doubly difficult. On the engine which was sent' to the scene of the out"break was a 40-gallon teuik and first aid pump, and by this means, an effort was made to save the dwelling. By pouring buckets of water into the t*ink and pumping it from thence, a fair pressure was obtained, but ail efforts to savo the building proved fruitless In this particular road there is no water supply, and hnd a lead been taken from the river some 2000 feet of hose would have been required. The water would necessarily ha\o beeri pumped through this great distance" of hose, with the result that the pressure when it reached the nozele would have been negligible. - The building was uninsured* but a policv of £l6O on the 'contents was held "by the Liverpool London and Globe office. Both the dwelling and contents were, completely destrojed.
