GENERAL NEWS.
Progress -is being made with the laying of the underground cables for telephonic communication within the borough. Workmen are at present engaged in Park street, and their work of opening up the ground is facilitated by a single-furrow plough, drawn by a traction-engine, turning over a deep furrow ahead of them.
Miniature Rifle Shooting. The weekly shoot of the Willowby Miniature Rifle Club was held on Monday for a trophy given by Mr L. Pratley. The shooting • was ' excellent throughout the evening. In the first shoot B. Broomfield, D. Mackay, and L. Mackay tied for first place, and in the shoot off L. Pratley won. He presented the trophy to the club for a further competition. For the hotty button W. Tate and L. Pratley tied with a score of 34 each. In the shoot off W. Tate won. The following xverc some of the best scores put up during the evening: —W. sato and,L. Pratley, 34; D. Mackay, A. Pratley, B. Broomfield, 33; V. Nicholls, 32; W. Mackay, 31; T. Mackav, W. Smith, 11. White,. H. Watts, and W. Corbett, 30. > .-. ' .-. Golf.' " , On Saturday the. match for nett Vase will be played,at the Ashburton Club's links. The Temuka Club was to have visited Asliburtbn on Saturday, but owing to a team not being available the match was put off.
Main Highways. > At'the conference of members of., the Ashburton County Council -who 'hold positions as chairmen of Road Boards, the discussion on county roads in relation to the Main" Highways Act was discussed. Recently-some 350 miles of roads administered by the Road' Boards were declared county roads, the reason' for this; being, that"some 1 of.-the roads which were under .the control of Road Boards would beiiefit by the Main Highways scheme; In'' a 11' 243 ' miles of rdads have been recommended >tbthe Board by the County Council for declaration as main roads under tlie highway scheme. following is a list of the roads: —From Rangitata Bridge to Rakaia, via ELinds; Rangitata,Bridge to. the Gorge Bridge roadj via Mt.'
