ASHBURTON ATHLETIC CLUB.

The boxing tourney of the Ashburton Athletic Club for the season was...held in the Theatre. Royal last evening, when .there was a good attendance. There were, a number of competitors, including .M. Carrol, of "Wellington, and A*. Griffiths, of Dunediri, the present bantam-weight champion of New Zealand. Mr H. J. Dillon, was referee. Messrs A. N. and J. H: Grigg and W. Page were the judges, and Mr H. StcElrea was the announcer. / Before the matches commenced Sir J. C. N. Grigg (president) wished the club a successful season. . ..-.•,-■* The following were the results:— Novices. Light-weight—lf. McAvey, Ost 101b (Ashburton), v. P. Parker,. 9st 131b (Christchurch). In the first round Parker showed good defence. Both forced the.pace in the second round. McAvey did most vt .the leading, but Parker's ring-craft was good. In the last round Parker -was aggressive, and scored a popular decision. P. Parker (Christchurch), 9st 131b, v. S. Hughes (Ashburton), lOst. Hughes had.the advantage of height, but was weak on defence, and Parker scored, although ' his opponent was the aggressor. The second round, was a repetition of the first. Parker secured the decision. Bantam-weight—Andrews (Christchurch), Bst 111b, v. Moulton (Temuka), 7st 131b. Andrews had a big advantage- in weight, and ■reach. Moulton was the aggressor, but Andrews's long reach allowed him'to conneqt. "to the face a number of times.' In the second round Moulton kept away from his tall opponent, but at j close quarters he connected with some .neat counters, more - especially to the jaw.
