Last Saturday afternoon Mr R. B. Owen made a trip along the river, banks to New Brighton,' and yesterday he informed a reporter that he noted with satisfaction the great clearance of rubbish from'the river made by the Drainage Board's workmen. This consists, of the removal of logs from the stream and cutting back the overgrowth of trees which prevented only the shallowest of boats using the river. The work already done Mr Owen looks upon as an augury of the Board's intention to make a thorough job of clearing the river. Regarding the recommendation that a Priestman grab dredge should be used, he said he hopes that the capabftties and the economic advantages of the modern suction dredge would not be overlooked; also that provision would be made by the Board, in drawing up its estimates, to acquire as much as possible of the swamp lands in the vicinity of Burwood ttor reclamation purposes.
