General News. The first boxing tournament of the Ashburton Athletic Club will take place this evening, when some attractive bouts arc set down for decision. Chautauqua. At the annual meeting: of the Chautauqua guarantors the Chautauqua organiser, Mr R. C. Abbott, was present, and made a number of suggestions. It was decided that 75 per cent, of the net proceeds be given to the local Plunket Society's funds. It was proposed to hold six entertainments during the year. The following, executive ofl'u'ers were elected: —President, Mr tTas. Cow; vice-president, Mr 11. M. .Tones; treasurer, Mr E. Buchanan; secretary, Mr E. Craighead. Plunket. Society. At the monthly meeting of the committeo of the Plunket Society .there were present: —Mesdames T. Laing, A. Bushel!, P. Fawson, P. W. Watt, W. Lane, 11. Hunter, A. Amos, V. Gregory, J. C. 3ST. Grigg, J. Connor, A. H. Barnett, and G. Fisher, Sister and Misses K. Cameron, and E. Gates. The resignation of Miss Calder wv? received, and a motion oi regret was passed. Eeports on visits wera submitted, and considered satisfactory. It was resolved to write a letter of appreciation to Mrs D. Wood, expressing regret at her resignation. annual meeting was fixed for May SOth.
TTigh School Board. TIIO Ashburton High School Board of Governors met yesterday, when Mr C. Rcid presided over a good attendance of members. Tho headmaster suggested June 2nd as the opening • day of tire Memorial Library, but up to the present no reply had been received from the Hon. W. Downie Stewart, who had been asked to attend the function. It was decided to leave the matter of a suitable date- in tho hands of the headmaster. A communication was received from the Canterbury Education Board appointing Messrs R. Kennedy and JR. Bell as representatives on the Board. A letter was read from' tho High School Boards' Association stating lhat the secondary schools' conference would be held in Wellington on May 28th.
Mr J. W. Bowden and the headmaster were appointed as delegates to the conference. , . The .question! of the suggested amalgamation of the administration of the Technical and High Schools throughout New Zealand was brought forward.
