SELWYN. At *l# monthly meeting of tho Selwyn County Council there were present—Mr F. J. Andrew (chairman), and Crs. W. Gilmour, T. B. Peareon, W. Stone, B. M. Izard, G. Hight, R. H. Johnston, and N. J. Brown. Leave of absence was granted to Or. G. Hall. Tho Engineer reported that the estimated cost of a bridge at McKio's road was £330. The chairman gave notice that he would move at the next meeting that a general rate of three-eighths of a .penny in the pound and a Hospital and Charitable Aid rate tSf one-fourth of a penny in the- pound be levied on all the rateable property, in the county. The Resident Engineer of Publio "Works wrote stating that in the event of special assistance being required for the maintenance of any road owing to additional traffic being thrown on it during the railway strike, representations should be made immediately. The chairman of the Main Highways Board forwarded rules of procedure issued by the Highways Board, stating that the Board had no power to subsidise any work carried out on main highways prior to the date of their declaration as main highways. The Mount Herbert County Council forwarded a resolution that the leper patients now on Qu*il Island should be removed to a more suitable locality.—lioceivod. Mr H. G. Cain applied for permission to plough the side of tho road opposite his property to destroy gorse. Permission was granted under the usual conditions. Mr R. B. Hill applied for the lease of a Bhingle reserve at Duneandel. The matter Was left in the hands of the Engineer. It was decided that the Automobile Association be asked to remove the signboard which it had erected at Bankside, on which motorists are directed to leave the main road and use a Riding road, as the Council . °P'nion that now the Miin Highways Act is in force, the Association should not direct traffic from the main highways on to roads which are maintained by Ridings. Cr. Izard was granted leave of absence during the time he is away in America. 9

CHEVIOT. Tie monthly meeting of the Cheviot County Council was held on Saturday; Present: Crs. J. H. ,L. Hiatt (chairman), T. Stevenson, W. Jj. Poster, D. McLaren, A. D Anderson, and S. Douglas. Mr W. J. Hopkins made application to have an extension of the Sisters road dedicated through Mr McLaughlan's land and also his own property. The clerk was in structed to reply that in the event of Mr Hod kins leqtiiripg a,, road it would be necessary for him to dedicate and form game according t the Council's road standard. The Railway Department wrote stating that they were prepared to plank the Waiau railway bridge, ao that traction engines oould cross, provided the Council, paid half the cost. viz.. £llBO. The Council was not able to accede to the proposal. Application forms f<Sr road .grants were forwarded by the Publia Works Department. and it was resolved tj apply for a renewal of grants now on the estimates, but to ask for an increase on the Eggleston road.
