NAVAL BUILDING. LIGHT CRUISER COMPETITION. NATIONAL PROGRAMMES COMPARED. (B? CABLE —SBJSSB ASSOCIATION COPTBIGHT.) ("Aaous.") (Received May 7th, 9.40 p.m.) WASHINGTON, May 6. Interesting data concerning the present naval building of the Washington Treaty Powers will be presented at the Congressional investigation of tlio American Navy, whose alleged deterioration President Coolidge is reported to ha/ve discounted ns erroneous. The data show that Japan's programme is the greatest, especially in high-speed light cruisers and destroyers. The following figures of building programmes are supplied: Total Cruisers and tons. Destroyers: tons. Britain ... 116,440 41,000 U.S.A. , . 64,496 46,000 Japan ... 178,065 133,000 - France ... 71,748 64,936 Italy .... 11,200 '11,200 'Only destroyers. The main competition involves light cruisers, in wbioh both Britain and the United State* are deficient. Britain is the only Power building Dreadnoughts. ' • These figures will be used to convince Congress of the necessity of appropriating funds to build eight 10,000 ton cruisers.
