NAVY LEAGUE.
MEETING OF GENERAL COMMITTEE.
The general committee of the Canterbury branch of the Navy League met last night. Present: Messrs J. J. Dougall (chaiiman), A. Ferguson, W. J. Cracroft Wilson, A. K. Anderson, W. Walton, J. O. Jameson, Mesdamea Blunt and Norton Francis, and Misses Creswoll and Macbeth. Apologies were deceived from Mesdames Baadel and Marrincr, Miss Sanders, Brigadior-General A. W. Andrew, and Messrs '£. H. Foster, T. R. Quill, and Omerod.
It was decided to contribute £lO towards the payment of the conference secretary, and to subscribe to an illustrated newspaper for the men of H.M.S. Philomel.
A letter was read from. Commodore Beal of H.M.S. Chatham thanking the branch for the entertainment provided for the officers and crew, and stating that it had bean greatly appreciated by all ratings privileged to be present. Regarding the discussion of Admiral Consett's book, "The Triumph of Unarmed Forces," Mr Ferguson said &at -he was awaiting further information in the shape of a book by Mr Everett, of the Secret Sirvice, which contained assertions that backed up Admiral Consetjfs statements right up to the hilt. When he received this work.it was his intention to address a letter to the chairman uf the General Committee on the whole subject in order to brim? the matter before members of the commiftTe. He had decided on this course because in a speech one was apt to be carried away by his feeling, or to forget important: phases cf the subject.
It was decided to* let the matter Btand over in the meantime.
A letter firom the London Headquarters o! the League was read, stating that it was intended to take advantage of the presence of members .of the" League from all parts of the Empire at the British Empire Exhibition to hold an Empire Conference of the League with the view of discussing .means for co-ordinating the work of th© League as a whole) and asking the branch Xu .appoint delegates. It was decided to ask Messrs A. S. Taylor and A. T. Chapman to represent the branch. The secretary (Mr C. J. TreleavenV reported that many instances it would bs necessary to re-form many of the school branches of the League, and he intended taking this work in hand shortly. The report was received.
