TRANSVAAL PROFESSOR FOR AUCKLAND.

• •> SCOTS' ENTHUSIASM. (FROM OUE OWN correspondent.) PIETERMARTIZBURG, January 16.. Professor A. C. Paterson, Rector of The Transvaal University College, and formerly of Edinburgh, had a splendid send-off from Pretoria on Monday evening, January 7th, on entering upon hig journey to New Zealand to fulfil his appointment at Auckland of Professor of Classics and English. Over two hundred people, including very many Scots, assembled at the Pretoria railway station to see Professor and Mrs Paterson off, singing "Auld Lang Syne" and ''Will Ye JSo Come Back Again," as a prelude to the starting of the train. Among those present was Lady Steel, of Jfietermaritzburg, sister of the Professor, and widow of a former Edinburgh Provost. The present high state of excellence of the Transvaal University College is a tribute to Professor Paterson. He has put into it a vast amount of hard and conscientious work, and his place will be hard to adequately fill. Mrs Paterson has also, in her own sphere, been of considerable service to the community of the city, as president ol the Arcadia branch of the Women's South African Party.

The valedictory entertaining of Professor Paterson was a remarkable tribute to his popularity. He was a past chief of the Caledonian Society. They entertained him, also the bowlers, old students, the Council of the University and staff. Presentations, luncheons, dinners, and teas testified to the worth of one of the best type of Scots colonists. His transfer is the Transvaal's loss, and should be New Zealand's gain.
