Mrs J. J. Collins (Springfield road) has returned from a short visit to Wellington. Mrs J. A. Leckic (Melbourne), who is on an extended tour through New Zealand, has arrived in Christehurch, and is staying Warner's Hotel. Mrs 11. F. Mooney (Auckland) is at present visiting her daughter, Mrs W. M. Campbell (Springfield). Mrs J. F. Ilartland (Auckland) is visiting her sister, Mrs 11. Tod (Chapter street, Papanui). Misses 11. E. and K. Watson (Dunedin) are staying at the Clarendon Hotel.

Among the guests at the United Service Hotel are:—Miss Field (Sydney), Mrs R. It. Kelly (Auckland), Miss Grevatt (Auckland), and Mr and Mrs A. 11. Nathan (Sydney). Miss Violet Herdman is the guest of Mrs David Matson.

Mr and Mrs W. A. Morgan (Mt. Somers) are amongst recent arrivals at the Royal Hotel. • Miss Ella Thomson has been successful in gaining her L.A.B. degree at the recent examinations.

Dr. and Mrs Hogg, Mr and Mrs F. M. Young and family, and Dr. and Mrs Bower-Bank are visiting Mount Cook. Tho weekly dance held at Dixieland was a pronounced success on Saturday night, when fifty couples danced to excellent music supplied by Sutherland's Jazz Band.

Much interest, especially feminine interest, is centring round the Canterbury Jockey Club's Meeting, to be held at Riccarton on Saturday. Fortuno has certainly smiled tho club this week, with the result that a combination of circumstances has arisen that should make Saturday's. gathering a really memorable event. The fact that Gloaming is running in the Middle Park Plate is sure' to attract many interested visitors, who, though not regular racegoers, are anxious to see the beautiful horse in action. The officers of H.M.S. Chatham have expressed their tention of being present. The members of the club's executive', always eager to extend privileges to their patrons, have decided, on this occasion, to reduce the charge for admittance of Indies to the grandstand enclosure to ss.

The parishioners of St. Aidan's , Church, Scargill, met at the residence of Mr and Mrs Coe, to say farewell to their vicac, the Rev. F, R. Rawle, and Mrs Rawle. On behalf of the parishion. ers, 2<frs Coe presented the prnests of the Evening with a cheque. The Rev. I''. R. Rawle suitably responded. Musical items and a dainty supper brought a pleasant evening to a close. Misses Doris Thacker and Marjorie JTait were joint hostesses at a delightful progressive tennis' party given at "Merivale House" in honour of Miss Rita Matson, who is to be married next week. Amongst the guests were Miss Hale, Mrs E. G. Norman, Mrs Maurice Johnson, Mrs Arthur Skinner, Mrs Allan Matson, Misses Dorothy Hay, Daphne Beadel, Jonln Jamicson, Zoe Gray, Dorothy Diamond, Betty Whitton, Rona Matson, Jean McDougall, Naneye lo Cren, May Thaeker, Violet Herdman, Marjorie McDougall, Fay McKinnon, Greta Clarkson, and Berry Peacock. After many exciting games, Mrs Skinner and Miss Fay McKinnon proved the winners of the tournament. The girl friends of Miss Doris Gibbs, who is shortly to be > married, entertained her at a charmingly novel party —a pink and blue "shower"—held at 115 Gloucester street. The guest of honour wore a dainty draped frock of "'shell-pink georgette, and all tho guests wore either pink or blue frocks. The effective decorations, the dainty supper dishes, and the many beautiful gifts brought for the bride-elect were all prink or blue, and even theorizes for the competitions, wer&v won by Misses Ida and Marjorie Denton, were of tho same delicate colours. Needless to say, tho guests spent a thoroughly enjoyable evening. On Thursday afternoon the lady members of the Springfield branch of the Plunket Society met at "Airedale" to do honour to Miss Sybil Johnson (Mt: Torlesse), who has been honorary ! secretary to the branch since its formation, but has lately resigned on account of her approachirg marriage. Miss Johnson hag proved herself a very capable and energetic worker, and was most successful in organising functions for the financial support of the Society. To further die welfare of the mothers and babies of the district has been her aim, and the mothers, to show their appreciation of hex endeavours, met in force to present her with a token of their esteem in the shape of a silver hot-water jug, suitably inscribed. In acknowledging the gift, Miss Johnson hoped that the Society would continue to flourish, as the district, the Dominion, and the Empire would benefit by its work. Dainty afternoon tea was served in the dining-room.

The Beckenham Tennis Club held a very successful dance in the Becken- | ham Hall on Saturday evening to mark the opening of tho Tennis Club, the formal ceremony having taken place in the afternoon. The hall was prettily decorated in the club's colours, red, yellow, and black, and the dance music was supplied by Miss Tilleyshort's orchestra. Mr and T.trs John O. Lucas, of Rustenburg, South Africa, were the guests of- Mrs Andrew Philnott, Mr Lucas's sister, on Saturday afternoon, wlipii a happy reunion took place and relatives numbering about fifty, met and had tea at the farm in St. Albans. A large room was specially decorated for the occasion, and the gathering sat down to a sumptuous repast. Mr T. P. Moore proposed the toast of Mr and Mrs Lucas, and remarked that, it was twenty-two years since a similar function had been hn!d and hoped that a shorter period would elapse when they would again meet. He wished them i.he best of luck and a. safe return. Mr J. O. Lucas thanked the gathering for the hearty way the toast had been drunk, and said that he left New Zealand for South Africa twesty-eight years ago, having visited New Zealand twice in that time. He said that he would be pleased to welcome visitors to his home in Africa, but hoped they would not all come at once. He also referred to his sons, Owen and Cliff, who were now in England and South Africa respectively. The toast was accompanied with the singing of "For They Are Jolly Good Fellows." Music and games brought a very pleasant evening to a close. Those present ineluded Mr and Mrs J. O. Lucas, Mr and Mrs Andrew Philpott, Mr and' Mrs G. Ni Lucas and family, Mr "Win.
