The .!;i\\>ni]e Handicap, for two and threc-vlcirs-olds. which "now takes the place .'.:' the Apprcmices' Plate, has also filled well. Tho Fgmont Cup, whicli last year was reduced to a mile and a quarter, bus ben extended to a mile and a ii.-iif for fo-dav's race, and lias attract- (■ I an excellent field, headed by Surveyor -----i (li Pst fdb. The going may 1,/ a trifle hard for Nassau's brilliant ; . : or>. bui with Income, Marquoteur, Cold Steel, Muraahi, and Loyal Irish among tho other probable starters, there is material available for a. contest quite'in keeping with past races for the Egmont Cup. The field for the Flying Handicap is rather a weak one. Halgina, with only Sst, Sib, probably kept some others at home, bat A.vola, on the minimum, c.-inoof. bo overlooked. Trapuka litis been racing consistently lately. A return to his spring form would make A. laric. dangerous with 7st 51b up. Cralla, who registered a win and a second aI; the Takapuna Jockey Club's Summer Meeting last week, is in tho Tsolan Cup with 7st 111b, a handy weight, and the Australian filly will be opposed by winners at recent meetings in Iliapotoa, Knighton, Lnsylvia, and Yorna, all of whom showed form above that of average hacks during the holiday period. Avola may be asked to contest this event in preference to the Flying Handicap, but, although galloping .well on the tracks, she has shown sign's of soreness, and would be better suited by tho Sst less to carry and the shorter distance in the latter event.
Twelve of the sixteen originally ban- j dieapped* for tho Dunedin Cup to be run to-morrow have had their engagements continued, and it seems as though Jjoughrea, Limelight, Boseday, and Mantua will fight their "Wellington Gup battle over again. Palestrina has not impressed overmuch when pitted against tho best class. Of the horses who did not ran at Wellington, Deucalion, Baldowa, General Advance, and Boadieca must all be taken into account, particularly Deucalion. Ho is a good horse at the distance, and had ho kept sound during the round of holiday meetings would probably have shown form earning for him more than the Bst 51b at which he is now assessed. Baldowa is meeting Longhrea on lib better terms than when lie won from the latter over a mile and a quarter at tho last meeting at Dunedin, but on that occasion the race was not truly run, and tho handicapper is probably justified in thus expressing hia opinion as to the merits of the two. Winning Hit has disappointed too often during the past few months to be considered a possible, though when right would bo equal to the best he* has to meet to-morrow. Dame Straitlaco • has yet to repeat her New Zealand Cup performance, and hex poor displays subsequent to the big race at Biccarton may not mean that she has seen her best day. That hard week's racing certainly got to the bottom of her for a while, but she has not raced since the Summer, Meeting at Wingatui, and a not over-strenuous time in the five or six weeks intervening may have brightened, her up sufficiently for her to show that she is quite as good as her Eiccarton form portended. Only five axe under orders in. the Autumn Hurdle Handicap, and Palamon will carry a lot of money. He has to show some improvement in his jumping before being considered a good one at tho game, and his four opponents can all be trusted to give him a hard race.
In the Trial Handicap the field is comprised of young horses, who have not had much experience. Some of them, however, have already shown that they will not remain in trial class long, among them being Wensleydale,
April Shower;;, Beauty Light, and Hurdv Gurdv.
Many Kittle represents the best class in the Publicans' Handicap, and even with 9st 71b is not overburdened. Of those below him Kerb, Economist, Angelo. and "Wild Hind will not want for friends, though all may find it hard to dispose of Laughing Eyes, Master Sandstone (if started), and Ravenna. Ginn-ase may be a starter in the Dunedin Cup, but he would be more at home in the company he has to meet in the Stewards' Welter later in the dav. In this race Master Sandstone is ' well treated at Sst "lb, and the presence of Prince I'erouz f'st olb, Corn Hips and Silent King 9st 01b, Top Score Sst 111b. Golden Light Sst 61b, Francaise Sst 51b. All British Sst 'Jib, and Ostermnn. Vasilkov. and Thistle Crown, all on the minimum. Sst. assists in providing as hard a problem any race crowd would wish for in the concluding event on a day's card.
Coast guard. King Sol, Tresham, Starmist, Giantkiller. and Royal Wink have till been doing good work recently, and their appearance at Wingatui will be awaited with interest.

Nominations for the Nelson T.C.'s Annual Meeting and four events at the Nelson J.C.'s Annual Meeting close on Friday at 3 p.m. The acceptances lor the Metropolitan T.C.'s Summer Meeting are good. and arg'-ie well for a successful fixture. Eleven v.'e'l-penorrued licrses figure in the principal race, the Midsummer Handicap, including Acron. Wild Thyme. The North Island-owned and trained colt Nelson Fame has arrived from the North, and is quartered at New Brighton. The son of Nelson Bingen and Norico will be seen out at Addington on Saturday in the Juvenile Handicap, and will be driven by J. J. Kenr.erlev. The fact that Sheik, Delavan Quest. Peter Dean and Florrio Bingen did not accept at Addingion occasioned no surprise, as the quartet are freelv engaged at the Otahuhu T.C.'s Summer Meeting on February 16tn and 20th.
The Forbury Park track was in good order on Saturday." Peterwah established a record in the New Zealand Trotting Stakes, namely 3m 3G 3-Ss, the best previous time being 3m -IGs, done by Yottng Blake Inst season. Ben Ohau registered 2m 13s in the Au Revoir Handicap of one mile, beating Sir Henry's time of 2m 14 4-5s in May, 1023, while' Great Bingen equalled tho two mile record of 4m 2S 2-5s done by Don Caesar in January, 1916. Tho Wangamii sportsman, Mr G. G. Hill, intends settling in Auckland, and in futurn Blair Audubon and Lord Haldanc will bo trained at Alexandra Park. • Tho Auckland-owned pacers, First Carbine and Monevmakcr, are now under tho care of J. Fisher, who is preparing them for the Otahuhu T.C.'s Summer MeetingMr R. C. Fisken has mado a, further pur. chase from Mrs M. Duncan, in a. bay yearling filly by Nelson Bingen from Crimson Rose.
The Alaroa sportsman, Mr E. E. Lelievre, has purchased an American-bred coll by Guy Axworthy, brother to Arian Guy, and tho youngster is expected to arrive in Now Zealand shortly. The Australian trainer, H. (i. Rae, who trained a team of trotters and pacers at
Alexandra Park last season, was recently dis. qualified for six months by tho stewards at Epping, owing to his mount, King's Pride, failing to show up in n. race. Petcrwah's victory at Forbury Park evidently impressed Mr F. C. Edwards, handncapper at Otahuhu, as the American-bred colt is on lm 46s in tho Alexandra Handicap.
