ORCHESTRAL SOCIETY.
ANNUAL REPORT. The annual report of the Christchurch Orchestral Society states that finance is still causing the commiit'eo some anxiety. Tho orchestra acquitted themselves well during the season, under the conductorship of Mr H. G. Glaysher far the first two concerts, and under Mr Angus Gunter for the remaining two. Mr Glaysher was roleased from hi 3 contract as conductor of the Society to enable him to accept a good position in Christchurch, and the Society were fortunate in having Mr Angus Gunter's services- placed at their disposal at short notice. Mr Gunter made splendid progress with the orchestra during the time the players were under his control. The programmes were well chosen, and the Socioty's thanks are due to Miss ISiancy Bowden, Miss Jessie King, Mi3S Renetta Bing3, Mrs R. J. McLaren, Miss Aileen Warren, Miss Dorothy Talbot, and Mr P. S. Nicholls for their kind assistance at' concerts. Tho audiencea attending the concerts were sympathetic- and appreciative of tho work done by the Society, and tho idea of a request programme for the fourth concert remains popular. During the season the orchestra supplied the accompaniment to the choral work 3 of tho Royal Christchurch Musical Society, under tho baton of Mr Sydney Butler, L.R.A.M., in addition to playing an overture at that Society's miscellaneous concert, and the committee appreciates the players' loyalty in enabling the Society to fulfil their obligations in regard to the Musical Society. It is to bo hoped in the interests of music in Christchurch, that the two Societies will continue to bo associated.
The report states that while there was room for improvement in tho attendance at weekly practices, the work of the orchestra was, however, good, and augured well for the future.
The balance-sheet shows the receipts to amount to £224 Is 3d. the expenditure being only £2 13s 3d less. Liabilities are set down at £IOO, and assets £1 9s 3d above that amount.
