The team will practise during the week on the oval, and on Saturday will play a. game against the rest of the county at the oval. The following is the team to try out the county representatives: C. "V. MeNicoll, J. W. Batstone,. B. McGregor, I. Dunn, C. Andrews, W. Brady, S. Bevelley, H. Fraer, D. Fitzgerald, J. Willis, L. Humphries, U Huffam, P. Willis, and Stevens.' The big match is creating much interest in the town, and already criticisms of the team are being expressed at the street corners. Ashburton County is particularly weak m its bowling this season, bnt the two best bowlers' available in W. Drennan and E. Burns are to play. In batting strength probablv the best available men are in the team, but there is a palpable weakness in fielding. For the match against the Australians youth should have been the first consideration, yet there are men in the selected eleven v/ho will lose more runs in the field than they could possibly hope to make against the Aus-

tralian bowling. The brunt of the fielding will fall on the shoulders of men like L. Holford, Keeley, Nicoll, Tasker, Burns, Fryer, Drennan, and Willis, and the other three places in the team could possibly have been given to three of the most promising colts. In the second team there are men from the Fairfield Club who show a neat style and have plenty of cricket before them. Yet the team's position at the bottom of the table has jeopardised their chances of having more than two men in the eleven. However, the task of selecting a team is a- difficult one, and the selectors have done their best.
"I wonder why, with al! our efforts for economy, no London Parliamentary candidate lias proposed a tax on horses," writes a correspondent. "All the poorest horseflesh of the country seems to gravitate to London, and it would be hard to find in the metropolis a horse used for trade purposes which could —or, at any rate, which does—travel at a pace exceeding two miles an hour. The obstruction thus caused, to motor traffic is greater than that resulting from the repair of the streets, which has been blamed for it. The losa must run into millions a .year."
