LAW HOLIDAY.
LAWYERS AS SPORTSMEN. Yesterday wag the annual holiday o£ the Ohrißtchurci Law Society, the one day of tho year when barristorfl and clerks, meters of law, and first-year studonts givri themselves wholly np to sport and conviviality. The early morning was wet and cold, and there was some talk of a postponement, but the optimists wcro in tho majority. Their faith was justified, for tho rain cleared away and tho day was fine. Two big cricket matches were played .it Hsgley Pari;, and' tennis and bowling tournaments vreT© provided for tlio other sportsmen. Three temporary tennis courts had been put down au Hagley Park, but tho bulk of the matches were decided at tho United Club's cotirts. Th» outing was far foir. being merely a men's affair. There was a fair" number of women competitors, and in the afternoon many ladv visitors watched the contests.
About two hundred people sat down to lunch in a marquee erected on the ground. The guests of honour were tho Chief Justice, the Rt. Hon. Sir Robert Stout, and tho JHonourablo Sir Frederick Chapman, and there were present most of the prominent legal men, including the Mayor, Mr J. A. Fleslier. Mr V. W. Johnston, president of the 'Societv, Mr George Harper, Mr M. J. Oressori, Mr J. J. Dougall, Mr V. Wilding, Mr A. T. Donnelly, and Mr S. G. Raymond. TENNIS. The tennis tournament dwindled into a men's doubles handicap, as tho ladies did not think tlio wca'taer was too promising, and consequently did not turn up in /ull strength.
