General entries for the Victoria Racing Club's Autumn Meeting close today. Acceptances for the Tapanui Eacing Club's Annual Meeting are due to-mor-row. Nominations for the Nelson Jockey Club's Annual Meeting close on Friday.' Recent visitors to the Manawatu district speak highly of the stock that tho imported horse Arrowsmith is leaving. Amongst them is a fine colt foal from Loyal .Arch by Marble Arch— Minnie, and two .yearlings from Going Up, by Absurd —Marsala, and Lady Vladimir, by Vladimir—Merrio England mare respectively. Arrowsmith himself was one of the fastest sprinters in. New Zealand, and it is not surprising to find that his progeny are turning out well. J. Holt, who supervised the preparation of Eurythmic in his racing days, has trained more winners than any other trainer in Victoria during the current racing season, and he lias a long lead over his two nearest rivals, the two Godby brothers. So far horses trained by Holt have been placed in 41 race's this season. . In the matter of stakes won James Scobie has done best, as his seven winners have returned to their owners over £14,000. Of course, Bitalli is the principal contributor to that sum, as his Melbourne Cup victory was worth £10,588. The lowest weight S. Donoghue got down to in England last year was 7st 61b, to ride Scapino in tho Delamere Handicap, of £616, two miles, at Manchester on November 22nd. Scapino was weighted at 7st 41b, but Donoghue had to declare 21b over. The race was supposed to be a certainty for Scapino. However, Be a Lad, an outsider, ridden by the Australian W. McLachlan, junr , upset calculations. Scapino got his head in front a furlong from home, but Be a Lad eventually beat him a neck. "Paris Sport" has received word from New York stating that M. Wertheime'r has signed an' agreement with M. Belmoiit to send Epinard to America in July next to run a series of three or live races. • Contests over a mile, ten furlongs, and a mile and a half are probable, and possibly further events of six furlongs and two miles. . Naturally, Eugene Leigh, the trainer, will accompany the French crack.
At the close of each racing season in England a controversy is annually expected as to whether the three-year-olds that contested in the time-honour-ed classic races are up to the standard of the past. A feature of the season was that in the live great classic events —Two Thousand Guineas, One Thousand Guineas, Derby, Oaks, and St. Leger—four different horses figured as winners. Ellangowan (by Lemberg) won the Two Thousand Guineas, Tranquil (by Swynford) scored in the One Thousand Guineas and St. Legcr, Brownhylda (by Stedfast) won the Oaks, and Papyrus figured as the Derby winner. "Vigilant," of the London "Sportsman," takes a pessimistic view of the calibre of the three-year-olds that raced in England during ilnsb season, and in tho course of review remarked:—"Up to Ascot, and even Goodwood, I was inclined to think that the answer was in the aifirmativo, but the autumn form conclusivelyproved, to my mind, that our second season animals arc much below par." On the other hand, Mr William Allison, "The Special Commissioner," writing in tho "Sportsman" of the same date, does not subscribe to the opinion held by "Vigilant." In referring to ,tho three-ve-airi-olds, Mr Allison .remarked: "Thero are some who will not have it that onr throe-year-olds are eood, but I qntircly disagree with them. That is to say, I am certain Tranquil is tho finest filly we hare
seen since Sceptre, and, as an individual, she is far superior to Pretty Polly. Papyrus and the other leading three-year-old colts, to the number of about six, are considerably abovo the classic average standard."

"Imagine a great factory where little or no work is done: buildings that cover acres, miles on miles of corridors, rooms after rooms, machines of a hundred different kinds. Every known scientific device, every known scientific principle in usable form is embodied in one room or another; equipment more perfect than anything ever before dreamed of. But that -whole great plant, with all its possibilities, all its intricate mechanism, is standing idle, not abandoned, but not kept up. Only the footfalls of watchmen echo along the empty corridors ; cobwebs are across the windows, around the door knobs, between the spokes of the great flywheels, and thick dust over everything. The delicately adjusted machinery is motionless, rusting silently away f the whole wonderful plant, with all its marvellous equipment, practically Going to waste. "What is it? That's a leading psychologist's picture of the average human mind," sajs "Collier's 1 '
