THE LABOUR CABINET.
EARL OF HAKROWBY PREDICTS EARLY END.
"If only half of til© British. Labour Party's programme is carried out, it will be. a sorry day for England," 6aid the Earl of Harrowbj in the course of an. interview given to a representor tivo of "Tus Press" yesterday eodn after hi 3 arrival in Christclntfch from Sydney v;ia- Wellington. As a former member of Parliament, sitting m tuo Conservative interests, Lord Harraivby way, he said, deeply interested in questions of Imperial interest and lmpoftiitice, but, he added, as he had lett iinglaiid in October last and had travelled extensively kiiico then, he was not thoroughly conversant with the political feeling in Brigland. in his opinion the Labour Government would not last long. He anticipated their downfall beiiig brought about bv the demands of the extremists for tho, carrying out of tho official programme of nationalisation, and the inauguration of the capital levy. If half of that programme were carried out it would be a sorry day for England. One effect would, be to drive capital out of England. The increase in taxation would make the position untenable for capital. ' ''But don't allow me to let you go away with the impression that I think this will he brought about bv Mr MaeDonald or his Cabinet. I don't say that this will be brought about at once or by the present Cabinet." v Lord Harronvby explained that he was riot in close -touch with affairs at Horn©. He could only judge by the official programme of the Labour Party. His son. Viscount Sandon, had been defeated in the election. Lord Harrowby understood that tho defeat of the Conservatives was dug to the food question and' the women's rotes. The cry of "dearer food"- had been used bv the Radicals. It was a good election cry, in 'that it had attained its object, but it. was a dishonourable one. Whether Mr Baldwin bad been right or wrong Lord Harrowby did not know.
