BATCHELGR WINS 220 YARDS. (riIES 3 ASSOCIATION TELEGRAM.) WAIC GrAXUI, January 23. The -swimming championship meeting waß continued to-day and to-night. There was a large attendance and excellent swimming. Besults:— 220 yds N.Z. Championship. First heat—C. Atkinson (Canterbury) 1, E. Bradley (Auckland) 2, L. Firgray (Auckland) 3. The only starters. Atkinson and Bradley were together for the firs*, two lapi, when Atkinson forged ahead and won by several yaTds, the third man & coupl© of yards furthur back. Time, 2m 41 l-ss. Second heat—N. Batchelor (Canterbury) 1, E. V.»Cunnold (Auckland) 2, C. Clax.dge (Wellington) 3. Also started: A. Adamson (Hawke's Bay). Adam3on had a slight iiaa at the end of the second lap, but then took charge and won by a couplo ot yards from Cunnold, who finished well, wit i Claridge close up third. Time, 2m 43 1-sa. Third heat—W. Smith (Auckland) 1, JEnwright (Auckland) 2, D. 3£unrcll (Wellington) 3. Also started: F. McKcague (HawJiea Bay). Smith quickly established a lead and was a couple of yards to the. good a ** cr four lengths had been c jvr.r cl, with ' wright second, just a touch ahead of Jlurrell. There was practically no ihango to the end, Smith winning by a couple of yards from Enwright, who appeared to be t-iking things' comfortably. Muitrell .was close up third. Time, 2m 45 4 ss.

"With fifty yards to go Batchelor forged to the front and, with a fast sprint, won by a foot, from Enwright, with Smith a yard further hack. Time, 2m 38 2-ss. 75yds Intermediate Girls' Championship. First heat —M. Farquhar (Auckland) 1, JWhyman (Wanganui) 2, R. Milier (Otago) 3. Also started —Mies Lynch. From an even break, Mis 3 Farqnhar soon established a slight lead from Miss W.hyman, eventually winning by two yards. Miss Miller was threo yards away third. Second ■ heat —M:. Jet>son (Otago) 1, A. Mather (Canterbury) 2, U. Brent (Wanganui) 3. Also started—A. Potaka and P. Svenson, both of Wanganui. Miss Jepson, with a very fast stroke, went to .the front .from the jump, and won comfortably. Third heat—P. Page (Auckland) 1, M. Bell (Auckland) '2, E. Hannan (Canterbury) 3. Also started—E. Grant (Auckland) _ and M. Ansley (Wanganui). Miss Hannan had a slight lead over the first lap, but Miss Bell then took charge and led to within a yard of the finish, being beaten oy a touch. ■ Time, 53 2-ss.

The 220 yds men's championship provided a good race. The heats in the morning were not keenly contested, though the times were good. With Batchelor, finwright, Atkinson and Smith in the final, a great racs resulted. Smith had the lead most of tho wa y> Batchelor had his measure at the 150 yds mark, aiid. went on to win all out. The time for the first 100 yds was 65 4-sscc, Smith lying first, with Atkinson and Batchelor a yard away. Atkinson failed -to last, and was beaten out, of a place by Smith, who stayed long enough to get third place. Enwiight finished fast in second place. Tho four men were inside the standard time of 2m 43sec, Atkinson going 2min 42sec Lindsay took tho lead from tbo start in the 880 yds intermediate boys' championship, and swimming a powerful stroke led at 100 yds in 70 3-ssec, with Barker syds away second, and the rest of the field' syds behind, Lindsay increased his lead at the 440 yds mark by a length on Barker, and wont on to win in the good time of lSmin Ssec, two seconds under the standard. Stokeir swain a good race, but was outclassed, and finished, third. The junior girle' breast-stroke resulted in Miss Anderson registering a. good performance, The event would ( have been a certain (Continued at foot of aext column.)

With seven in the; field for the men's breaststroke, two heats were necessary. Moorhouse was very lucky to be awarded his heat, as he was very weak on the turns. He mside no mistake in the final, and, swimming in perfect style, won by ten yards in record time. Last year's champion, Batchelor, was bea.ten into third place by'Fairgray. .
