SPORTING.

—«

dominations for the Canterbury Jockey Club's Summer Meeting close at 8 p.m. on Friday, and at the same time fi>3t forfeits are due' for the Middle PaTk Plate.

Acceptances for the Dunedin Jockey Club's Autumn Meeting are due on Friday, 'when subscriptions for the D.J.C. Champagne Stakes also fall due. The four-year-old colt Psychology, by Tracery—Keep Smiling, recently purchased in England by Mr T. H. Lowry, was one of the lots submitted to auction at the blood stock sales at Newrnarkct in December, and failing to reach the reserve placed on him, was withdrawn at 2-AOOgns. Psychology and Grand Court, by Captivation—lia Huppe, another of Mr Lowry's purchases, were shipped from England on the Corinthic on December 2Sth.

Brownhylda, the winner of the Oaks Stakes last year in England, elicited plenty of bidding at the Newmarket sales, but not so much as had been anticipated, and she was withdrawn at *ssoogns, says the "Sporting Chronicle.'' She has grown very much, since September, and is now on the leggy side. In addition, her forejoints show signs of wear, and she is not so good-looking. The imported horse Illumination, by Limelight—Fleet Street, who recentlychanged hands in Auckland, has been sent to Te Awamutu, where he will in future be trained by F. Loomb. Eight and Left was badly galloped on during the Auckland Cup race, but has now recovered sufficiently to be placed in commission again by J. Thorpe. Grand Canyon, who was a runner in the Hauraki Hurdles at Takapuna on Saturday, was making his reappearance after a long absence caused through unsoundness. His last start was in the First Hack and Hunters' Steeplechase at the Winter Meeting at Trentharn in 1922, when he ran second to Seadown. He is a line jumper, and provided he stands up in his preparation should be heard of in good company during the winter campaign. The combination Mu3ketoon and "W. Eyan seems a happy one. Eyan, who rode the Ste'dfast colt when he won the Takapuna Cup on Saturday has been associated with each of his wins in the Dominion with the exception of the Makaraka Handicap at the Poverty Bay Turf Club's meeting last spring, when J. O'Shea had the mount. Kyan had won the Spring Handicap on Musketoon the previous day, but had a fall in the Maiden Handicap later in the afternoon, meeting with injuries which kept him out of the saddle for the remainder of the meeting. King Merv, winner of the Stewards' Handicap at Takapuna, is a three-year-old gelding by Quiii Abbey—The Band. He has not raced siuce the Hamilton Racing Club's Meeting on November 10th and 12th, when he accounted for the Claudelands Hack Handicap from Smoke, King Cheops, and eleven other runners. In this race he started favourite, consequent probably on Ms good performance in the Gordon Handicap at the A.R.C. Meeting. In.this race the field contained 36 starters, and King Merv won handily by a length. He was unplaced in his first start this season, and did not sport silk as a two-year-old. He has thus won three race's in four attempts. Form was remarkably consistent at the Wellington Bacing Club's Meeting last week. Carawock registered two i firsts and a second; Vagabond, a sec- | ond and two thirds; Glentruin, two seconds; Nigger Minstrel, one first and one | third; Lady Bentinek, one first, one ' second, and one third; Penelophon, two firsts; Ihapotoa, one first and one second; Lovesign, one first and ono third; Eoseday, one second, and two thirds; Gold Light, one first, one second, and one third; Civility, one first and one third; La3t Crust, one second and two thirds; Tukia, one second and ono third; and Prince Ferouz, two seconds. "There have been many important developments in the racing and breeding -industry in Ireland in recent years,' but none more important than that which I am now in a position to announce" writes the Irish correspondent of a London exchange). "My announcement is that H.H. Aga Khan has acquired from Capt. Greer the Curragh properties at Sheshoon Turf Lodge and Whitehall for the purpose of breeding his own horses, many of which are likely to run in Ireland. The Aga Khan's purchases involve about 400 acres of the very best land. Captain Greer has, of been an extensive and successful breeder, and he has j maintained his stud on up-to-date lines, so that his successor has been very fortunate to find an ideal location for his enterprise. I understand that the reason for Captain Greer's sale of his stud farms was that he has found his time fully'occupied with the National Stud at> Tully, of which he is director. Not since Colonel W. Hall-Walker (now Lord Waverfree), of Gateacre, ■ bought the Tully property, which, since its transference to the British Government, has been known as the National Stud, has there been a more-important transaction than that completed by the' Aga Khan, whose decision to breed his horses in Ireland was, no doubt, influenced by the fact that his flying two-year-old of the past season, Mumtaz Mahal, is Irish bred on either side of her pedigree. She was got by The Tetrarch out of Lady Josephine, by Sundridge out of Americus Girl, by Gallinule, and Gallinule, it may be noted, was the property of Captain Greer, who bought him for the small price of 500 sovs."

An American invention., the MurrayCarr starting gate, was given its first chance on a metropolitan track at the latter end of November. Twelve horses were sent out of the seven-furlong chute by this machine, and they left in perfect alignment. It promises to revolutionise the starting on racecourses of the country if given a chance, says the New York correspondent of a London journal. There ivas a large group of horsemen at' the starting point for this race, and all were enthusiastic in their comment on the gate. "It's the best thing I've ever seen for starting horses of all temperaments," said Sam trainer of Zev. "The had actor must become tame when locked in his box and each horse has sufficient room for a clean getaway. I feel certain it will come into universal use." This was the sentiment of every horseman on the track, and there is talk of circulating a petition for its use in Maryland nert year. General Manager O'Hara, when asked if he would give the gate a chance at the Spring Bowie Meeting, replied it was up to the horsemen. "It looks like a good thing to me." he said, "and if the owners and trainers want it I will have it installed." The gate has a solid padded back about the height of a horse. Padded wooden bars form side walls, and when a horse is backed into the compartment he is locked in at the front by a heavy band. This is released by an electric buzzer which springs all bands at the same instant. Twelve hers?;; can be started, and each Iras ample room. Messrs Murray and Canhave been working on their starting gate for in.-iny years, and for the last three or tour seasons have been attempting to have it tried. The gate weighs 2600 pounds, and while a bulky cf.nrrivance it'can be moved from point ',.<.- point by horse power or with a trac- ' t-->r iw. .''i-.-'-ew minutes.

A recent addition to F. Holmes's team is the three-year-old colt Oriole, owned by the Greymouth sportsman Mr H. W. Kitchinghain. At the conclusion of the Wanganui T.C.'s Annual Meeting D. Withers returned Black Cloud to his owner, as the Eon of Jay Beldon failed to race up to expectations.

It. Humphreys's team has been strengthened by the inclusion of the Harold Dillon gelding Percy Dillon.

The Gisborne-owned and trained three-year-old trotter Peterwah arrived from the north on Saturday, and will leave for the south to-morrow to fulfil his engagements at Forbury Park.

The New Brighton trainer A. G. "Wilson, was a visitor to Addington on Saturday with his three-year-old trotter Sister Beatrice, who is engaged in the New Zealand Trotting Derby at Dunedin on Saturday. She looks in good racing condition, but owing to the rought state of the track tf?as restricted to half-pace, which sho did in a satisfactory manner. Amongst tho horses that worked at Addington on Saturday was The Tiger, a three-year-old trotter by Nelson Bingen from Runaway. He broke a couple of times, but otherwise acquitted himself well. Ho is engaged in the New Zealand Derby at Forburv Park, and is a certain starter. Sheik and Delavan Quest are amongst the horses engaged at Addington next month, and should P. Riddle decide to bring them south, their display will he watched with interest. WELLINGTON R.C.'S SUMMER MEETING. (special to "tut: pbebs ") WELLINGTON, January 27. The Wellington Racing Club's Summer Meeting was brought to a successful conclusion on Saturday. There was a large attendance, fine weather, and good racing, while speculation was brisk, trie totalkator handling £57,109 as against £63,693 on tho third day last year, making a total of £180,390 for the meeting, as against £185,492 last year. Palamort 6et out to make the paco solid, and led for ten furlongs, but he failed to run on, and Carawock taking charge won cleverly from Vagabond, the fco being well clear of the rest. Glentruin and Nigger Minstrel wero the only two to tackle Gloaming in the Waterloo Stakes. Gloaming appeared to bo a bit lighter than usual, and ho was wearing a plaster on his near front fetlock joint. He went freely in his preliminary, and so did his opponent*. Tho 'start was good, tho three getting away together, but they did not race for over two furlongs. Then tho two-year-old, Nigger Minstrel, went for- tho winning post. A furlong from home the three were being ridden with hands and heels, but over the last hundredi yards Gloaming- won fairly easily from Glentruin, who ran a great race considering the penalty she had to carry. Nigger' Minstrel 1b a good colt, but he was not ridden with the beat of judgment, for he did not make tho older horses carry their weights. Some nice two-year-olds faced the starter for the Hopeful Stakes, and .it was a splendid race. Lady Bentinck was made a'good favourite, and with Bonideer was the first into the straight, and she went on to win by a short length from Siacsi, who finished fast on the outside. Bonideer looked likely to be second, but he stopped in the last fifty yards, and was fifth at the finish. Rachael ran a fair race, but sho could not Btall off Lake Uru and Siaosi, who finished very fast wide out.

The Melrose Handicap wag a two horso race. Penelophon took charge three furlongs from home, and had-, to be Jrept going to bent Ihapotoa, who chased her right to the post. Pantagruel, who was third, was some distance behind Ihapotoa. The .winner ia a well-grown filly by King Mark from Hoy, and ahe will do well when more seasoned.

k Gold Light was a little better backed than Enthusiasm and Roseday for tho SiimI mcr Handicap, and she ran a fair race, but nothing had a chance with Lovesign, who left her opponents four furlongs from home and galloped in mi easy winner from Roseday, who ran a sterling race under his load of 9 9. The race waa run in lmin ;17 2-ssec. Roseday is certainly just about the best handicap horse in New Zealand. Enthusiasm ran a disappointing race, and so did Martian Miss and Wild Hind.

The handsome Highland was made a, good favourite for the Consolation Handicap, but he shonld not have been, a3 ho was much to& sore to show his best form. .Little River wca Ek.c_iv, but ii ilftJttua coaly have c-jr-

through a liiilo earlier from Inst phjoo, sh» might hare beaten him, as sho waa travelling faster than anything else oTer tho last furlong. Bonctter and Ardour were ckso bohind Mantua, but "Winning Hit ma a rathor poor filth. Civility and Last Crust oro both good hacks, and they had too much speed for tho opposition in tho City Handicap. Civility was one of tho first into tho straight, ■with Rational, Tukia, Economist, and Kerb straining to catch her, but they could not make any impression on the Elysian filly, who ran homo a good winner. Sho is a handsomo filly, and one that loots likely to do good things. Tho meeting was brought to a. close- with the Kaitoke Handicap. It was a great scramble, Piquant, Geranial, Benmure, Goldtown, Bugle Note, and.Entre Nous were-tha first to reach the straight, then Piquant looked to have the measure of the field, when Giantkiller flashed up and beat her in the .last stride. His supporters got a very nice price, as his dividend waa easily tho biggest of the meeting.

Tho Takapuns 'Jockey Club's Slimmer Sleeting waa opened to-day. Tho weather was fine, there was a largo attendance, and tho totaiisator handled £53,420 as compai-ed with £56,33-1 on the corresponding day last year.
