to Auckland, Wellington, ;LyUelton, and Dunedin. She is due at Auckland on February 13th, and the Wellington a week later. A peculiar feature about the fatality on the s.s. Kent (on which a sailor was killed by striking the deck when diving from tho mast), arid one that will strengthen tho alleged superstition of sailors (eays the "Dominion"), is that just before the s.s. Kent reached the Azores, a raven caitio aboand tho vessel. This was - regarded by the crew as a bird of ill omen and Some of jthe older seamen declared it foretold tho death of one of the members of tho ship's company. An officer of the Kent stated that he hnd kept the raven in a catje, being under the belief that the bir3 would leave the vessel at the Azores. The raven, however, refused to leave the steamer, and was a passenger until it picked the eyes crut of a canary which woa on board. The bird of ill omen was then shot. Strange to say, tho raven used to percli on the ladder just Below the spot from which Smith made his fata] lean. . Mr F. Marsden is relieving Mr J. Bennett aa wireless operator on the Maori. Mr Bennett is on holiday leave.

DAMAGE TO RIRA.

The ketch Bira, • which was damaged in the recent storm while en route from Auckland and Napier to Wellington, was inspected on Wednesday at Shelly Bay by Lloyd's agents in Wellington, with a .view to ascertaining the extent of the necessary repairs. It was found that the bulwarks on the starboard eide had been flattened and the stanchions of kaairi, six • inchee square, were snapped. off flush with the deck. The staysail boom, of the same material and dimensions, was also broken off.-short, and fro>m this can be judged the weight of the waves,' which came ■ aboard when,, tho 'ketch was about 50 miles east of Capo Palliser.- It is that the decks will havo to bo ripped up and the coiling underneath taken off to allow of repairs being below. The vessel has finished discharging explosives at Shelly Bay, and after temporary-re-pairs have been effected, which is expected to occupy some days, she will proceed to Dunedin to continue discharge. There work of refitting will bo - undertaken.- It is expected that it will take at least ten days.
