Trafßc south was blocked this morning owing to the Kowhai river having washed away the approaches' to the bridge. Th© channel is now beyond the bridge and all traffic ia stopped. Residents are indignant thac the Public Works Department have not taken advantage of the long spell of fin© weather to proceed with some permanent work. The rbads have received a fair amount of attention, but the bridges, with, the exception of the ixa.Uutu.ra, are in much the same position as during flood time in May.

At Hapuku, orr*the north road, only a temporary ford and approach have been made, and it is expected that with. the first fresh in th© river this bridge will be blocked. At Clarence only temporary prints have been placed on the river for th© transference ot stock, and motor traffic is still held up, th© difficulty being overcome by running two sets of cars— Blenheim to Clarence and Clarence to Kaikoura. Bridge carpenters arrived on Monday and a quantity of gum poles had arrived on the site in readiness to proceed with the placing of the cylinders in position, and it appears as if a year will elapse before the bridge is restored. The hotels, especially, have suffered as a result of the disconnexion, aad the district generally.
