WATER SUPPLY LOAN.

ANALYSIS OF VOTING.

It has now been ascertained by the Acting-Town Clerk, Mr J. S. Neville, that the number of voters eligible iO vote on a loan proposal in the city is 21,797, these being ratepayers and their wives whose names appear on the District Electors' 801 l with the qualification required. The valid votes cast on Wednesday on the water supply headworks extension loan proposal totalled 2290, which represents 10.5 per cent, of the maximum voting strength. The voting according to districts was as follows: Districts where Water is Already Supplied. For. Agst. Central , Linwood .. ... 130 I' 9 St. Albans .. .. 190 Sydenham .. ... 159 Totals .. 821 977 Districts TTnreticulsted. Bromley . . • • ® Opawa and St. Martins 37 -0 Papanui . . .. Spreydon .. .. 131 Woolston .. . 70 Totals .. 297 195 The reticulated districts recorded a majority of 156 against the proposal, while the unreticulated districts sh<yn ed a majority of 102 in favour of the loan. It is likely, however, that a number ot ratepavers belonging to the outer areas voted at,tlie Tramway Shelter or at some other central booth during the lunch hour, which would in all probability have strengthened the, support accorded the proposal in the central area. ' The Mayor, Mr J. A. Flesher, stated yesterday that he had no further comment to . make on the result, and the next move would have to be settled by the Council. It might happen that the proposal would be submitted again to the ratepayers. The cost of the poll just taken would amount to about £SOO, and a similar expenditure would be required if the loan was put forward again for the same procedure right from the beginning would have to be repeated.
