Tides. It will be high tide on The beach, this afternoon at 3.."J0. and in the river at ■■'.-(.', and to-morrow at 4.51 p.:n. and c>.2l p.m. respectively. i Concert. i A very enjoyable concert was given in Joyland Theatre on Thursday evening, in aid of the Central Queen Carnival candidate (Miss Essie Owles). The programme was as follows:—Quartet by Messrs E. J. Ilobbs, F, P. Morrison, B. Ecancl!, and A. S. Ilobbs; elocutionary items, Mr 11. A. Turner; solos, Messrs A. MaeDonald, A. Dey, and Miss Cara Iloidg.ite; duet. Miss Agnes Eichardson and Mr B. Eennell. The accompanists were Mrs MaeDonald and Mr E. J. Ilobbs. Prior to the commencement of the entertainment the Caledonian Society's Pipe Band, under Pipe-Major W. Ross,, played some rousing march tunes and reels outside the theatre. A very .hearty vote of thanks was accorded the entertainers. Burgesses' Association. At a meeting of the North Beach and "vvaimairi Burgesses' Association, Mr J. P. Whatman presided. Mr 11. Brunt, who lias accepted the position of secretary of the Association, was present, and was accorded a hearty welcome. The action taken by the committee in connexion with tramway matters was approved. It was, decided to ask the Chief Postmaster for an improved outward mail service, equivalent at least to that in existence prior to the war. Band Concert. The New Brighton Municipal Band will play the following programme at Pleasant Point to-morrow afternoon: — March, ' "The Middy"; waltz, "Thoughts"; overture, "Austspiel"; intermezzo, "Secrets"; one-step, "What Happened"; selection, "Opera Bouquet"; march, "2nd Battalion."" North. Beach Gala. A meeting of the North Beach Gala Committee was held on Wednesday, Mr E. A. Leaver presiding. The Children's Sports Committee submitted a lengthy programme of events for the children attending the primary schools. It was decided to send a circular letter to the several schools with, lists of events. It was also agreed that the schools should be visited by the secretary. Several applications for sites for stalls and side-shows were received and dealt with. Beach Church. The lady members of the congregation of the Beach Church have been working hard' during the past twelve months preparing for a sale of work and Christmas trq/?, which is to be held in the Pier Hall on Saturday and Monday, December 15th and 17th. The proceeds are to be in aid of the new church fund, and it is anticipated that a goodly sum will be realised by the effort. North Beach Queen Carnival. A meeting of the North Beach Queen Carnival Committee was held, on "Wednesday, Mr E. A. Leaver presiding. Final .arrangements wer» made for the concert promoted by Mrs Hulme in conjunction with the New Brighton Picture" Management on Tuesday next.•; ■lt'"was decided to convene a meeting of ladies who may be willing' to assist the candidature of Mrs Hulme; the North Beach Queen Carnival candidate. Methodist Church. The Bible classes and young people of the-'Methodist Church held a successful sale of work, etc,;'", in aid of their new rooms on Thursday. Under the leadership of the Misses Ballantyne and Hooker, there was a good deal of enthusiasm shown, and the various stalls did good business. The Rev. F. T. Read, who opened the proceedings in the unavoidable absence of the : Mayor (Mr J. Gamble), wished the four, classes every success in their effort: The fund will benefit to the extent of; £2B as a result of the sale. Personal. n ! Mr Joseph Williams, of Bowhill road, j has returned after about two months' stay in Oamaru. j Mrs A. J. Cole (of Swan I street), who has been acting as relieving teacher at the Tiinaru Main School, has returned home, Mr Jackman (of Osborne terrace) has been appointed to the Waikari school. Mrs James Gamble is confined to her home through illness. Centre Queen Carnival. The flags of the respective Queen Carnival candidates, flown at the Central flagstaff, are now being watched with interest.
