There are indications that serious efforts to amend the Volstead Act wil! be made durmg the coming session of Congress. This intimation is contained in an announcement that Representative Dyer, a Republican member of the Judiciary Committee, will introduce a measure legalising beverages containing 2.75 per cent, of alcohol. Mr Dyer has indicated that there is abundant scientific proof that BUch beverages would be non-intoxicating. He predicted that 75 per cent, of those now drinking bootleg liquor would imbibe the 6af© legal drink. Mr D yer is holding a safe strategic position, because of his membership of an important committee. He desirous of enforcing prohibition and will introduoe a measure providing for the deportation of aliens violating the prohibition law. ANGLO-AMERICAN TREATY. The Government disclaims knowledge of Lord Curzon's proposal that' the United States should deposit a guarantee of the validity of the ships' liquor section in the Anglo-American treaty. [Lord Curzon (British Secretary of State for Foreign Affairs) was reported to have asked if it would not be necessary for the American Supreme Court to pass judgment upon the constitutionality of a treaty permitting British ships to carry liquor stores into American waters.]
